Water ManagementDevelop an irrigation and drainage scheme for climate-resilient agriculture in Egypt’s Nile Delta.

Are you a MSc degree student and looking for an internship or side job in the field of water management and irrigation?
Witteveen+Bos, Dutch consulting engineers, is looking for a pro-active intern to develop an irrigation and drainage scheme in close collaboration with partner companies from the Impact Cluster BUCRA (Building Unity for Climate Resilient Agriculture). This design is part of a larger project, aiming to increase the productivity and income of farmers in Egypt, by improving water management, farming techniques, farming techniques, crop selection and the value chain.
The project includes the design of a pilot, which will be constructed and monitored. The project will be from February/March to the summer of 2025. The scope of the project is research and design of the optimal irrigation and drainage scheme on a pilot farm of 4 acres in Egypt, Sharkia province. The location will be the Netherlands, working from on of the Witteveen+Bos offices: Rotterdam/Utrecht/The Hague. With an option to visit the site in Egypt.
Key responsibilities include:

- Perform desk research using available datasets, maps, and reports to inform the SWOT analysis;
- Draft technical plans for water management, tailored to the specific challenges and opportunities of the selected pilot area;
- Collaborate with project team members to integrate water management strategies into the broader project framework;
- Prepare technical documentation and contribute to project reporting.

You will work within the product market combination (PMC) Water Management and Spatial Adaptation. The PMC is made up of a mix of young and experienced colleagues. Our PMC contributes to the sustainable use and development of water systems in both rural and urban areas in the Netherlands and abroad. In the Netherlands, our PMC is involved in spatial planning and policy development, as well as in nature restoration, drought studies, regional water system assessments, the creation of water management plans, and the modeling of hydrology, water quantity, and water quality. In international projects, our PMC is engaged in initiatives for water supply, flood prevention, and urban water management in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

**Requirements**:

- Currently enrolled in the second year of an MSc program in Water Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field;
- BSc degree in Water Management, Civil Engineering, or similar;
- Strong analytical and technical skills, with experience in GIS or other spatial tools being an advantage;
- Ability to work independently and deliver results within agreed timelines;
- Proficiency in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Desirable
- Experience with designing water schemes;
- Familiarity with farming/agriculture production;
- Knowledge on the land consolidation challenge for farming;
- Ability to communicate in Dutch language.
