Position Overview

As the demand for compact devices, including high-resolution mini- and microLED displays, continues to rise, the trend towards miniaturization of electronic components becomes increasingly pronounced. The challenge of efficiently handling and accurately positioning these minuscule components in high-speed, mass-production environments is significant. Each component must be meticulously selected, transferred, and assembled with interconnects at remarkable speeds.

Your Responsibilities

To achieve this intricate process, several elements must align perfectly. A critical aspect is the application of die attach material, which establishes both physical and electrical connections between components and substrates.

At TNO, we have pioneered a laser-based technology capable of depositing ultra-fine dots of die attach material. This process utilizes an embossed transparent carrier mask filled with the die attach material, which is then precisely transferred using a single laser pulse. A vital component of this technology is the consistent and reproducible filling of the carrier mask. To enhance this filling process, we have designed and constructed an automated coating setup. The primary objective of this internship is to leverage this automated setup to refine the filling parameters and subsequently oversee the design and construction of a specialized filling tool to advance the process further.

Expectations for Candidates

As a valued team member, your tasks will include:

  • Conducting literature reviews and engaging in discussions with fellow team members to gather knowledge;
  • Executing experiments within clean-room laboratory settings;
  • Analyzing experimental data and presenting findings;
  • Documenting results in a comprehensive technical report and participating in technical meetings and internal seminars.

We seek an ambitious, hands-on student pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, or (applied) physics. Strong communication skills in English are essential, along with the ability to work independently while being a collaborative team player. This internship is designed for a duration of 9 months, with a minimum commitment of 6 months.
