Research Project: Referential Communication in Multimodal Language

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join an interdisciplinary research project investigating referential communication in multimodal language. The project aims to explore how speakers of different languages integrate reference systems and pointing gestures when referring to objects in different locations, and how they monitor joint attention when producing/interpreting referential expressions.

Research Questions
  • How do speakers of different languages integrate reference systems and pointing gestures when referring to objects in different locations?
  • How do speakers of different languages monitor joint attention when producing/interpreting referential expressions?
Methodology

The project will employ a multimodal approach, combining corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, and experimental methods to investigate the use of reference systems in speech, gesture, and eye gaze behavior. A corpus of naturalistic dialogue interactions will be compiled, and targeted AR and VR studies will be conducted to experimentally test specific theoretical claims.

Requirements
  • Research Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., psycholinguistics, experimental psychology, cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience, linguistics, multimodal linguistics, pragmatics, computer science, data science)
  • Linguistic-conceptual knowledge of one or more target languages, which will be selected in consultation with the applicant
  • Experience with corpus linguistics or psycholinguistics or multimodal communication is desirable
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Affinity with programming (e.g., Python, R) and/or experience with corpus-linguistic methods and tools for data coding and analysis (e.g., ELAN, Praat, Red Hen Rapid Annotator)
What We Offer
  • Full-time position (39 hours per week) to start not before 1 November 2023 and not after 1 April 2024
  • Starting gross salary is € 2,721.84 per month
  • 30 holidays per year, based on a full-time employment
  • Research facilities, technical support, conference and travel budget, and participation in the International Max Planck Research School for Language Sciences
