Role Overview

This research initiative aims to establish and implement a cutting-edge computational framework designed to forecast the effects of nanoplastics on protein functionality. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Automating the identification of descriptors for chemical and conformational transitions of proteins in relation to nanoplastic interactions;

• Executing machine learning-enhanced free-energy computations;

• Developing predictive models to efficiently evaluate significant nanoplastic-induced alterations in a protein's free-energy landscape;

• Utilizing the framework across various nanoplastics and proteins to provide actionable insights for healthcare institutions, policymakers, and plastic producers.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct autonomous research within the Computational Soft Matter Laboratory;

• Collaborate with the Computational Chemistry team at HIMS, the Computational Science Laboratory at IvI, and experimental groups at HIMS, the Institute of Physics (IoP), and the Amsterdam University Medical Center (UMC);

• Publish and disseminate research findings both within the project and on international scientific platforms, including peer-reviewed journals, books, and conferences;

• Assist in the supervision of undergraduate and master's student projects;

• Participate in the educational activities of the department.

Candidate Profile

• A Master’s degree in a scientific discipline, ideally in physics, engineering physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or computational science with a focus on natural sciences;

• A solid foundation in physics, chemistry, and/or computational science;

• Prior experience with molecular simulations is advantageous;

• Familiarity with machine learning techniques is a plus;

• Proficient programming skills;

• Strong communication abilities in both oral and written English;

• Demonstrated initiative and effective time management skills;

• Enthusiasm for collaborating with students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral researchers on related projects and research groups within and beyond the Netherlands.

Employment Offer

A temporary contract for 38 hours per week over a period of 4 years (the initial contract will last for 18 months, with the possibility of extension following a satisfactory evaluation). The position is designed to culminate in a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be created, encompassing participation in courses and (international) meetings. Additionally, assistance in teaching undergraduate and master's students is expected.

The gross monthly salary, based on a 38-hour workweek and contingent on relevant experience, ranges between €2,000 and €3,000. The UvA also provides a comprehensive package of secondary benefits, including an 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%. The applicable UFO profile name and level will be determined.

The Collective Labour Agreement of Universities in the Netherlands is applicable.

In addition to the salary and a dynamic working environment at Science Park, we offer numerous fringe benefits:

• Annual holiday hours (based on full-time) and additional holidays between Christmas and January 1;

• Access to various courses offered by our Teaching and Learning Centre;

• A complete educational program for PhD candidates;

• Leadership training courses for academic staff;

• Courses on time management, stress management, and an online learning platform with numerous courses;

• 7 weeks of partner leave with full salary;

• Partially paid parental leave;

• Options for establishing a home office;

• A pension plan with ABP, with UvA covering two-thirds of the contribution;

• Opportunities to take Dutch language courses.
