Cathodoluminescence Analysis Specialist

Are you aware that high-energy electrons can act as effective sources for the optical excitation of materials? Our research team has pioneered cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy, utilizing 1-30 keV electrons within a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to stimulate nanomaterials. The oscillating electric field produced by the electrons serves as a comprehensive (0-30 eV) excitation source, achieving remarkable spatial resolution of 5 nm and temporal resolution of 5 fs. This capability allows us to investigate excitations and localized modes of plasmons, two-dimensional semiconductors, and a diverse array of optical metamaterials.
In this initiative, we will explore the potential application of CL spectroscopy within a scanning electron microscope (SEM) as a tool for semiconductor metrology. Our objective is to gather angle-, polarization-, and time-resolved CL spectra from intricate nanostructures composed of metals, semiconductors, and dielectrics, aiming to extract characteristic material properties and feature dimensions in three dimensions from the acquired datasets. The project encompasses investigations of simple model systems as well as complex structures such as nanosheet transistors, which are pertinent to semiconductor manufacturing, employing tomographic techniques alongside inverse design and machine learning methodologies. The goal is to ascertain the capabilities and constraints of utilizing CL in semiconductor metrology and to establish practical workflows for CL tomography.
Qualifications- A master's degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline.
- Exceptional social, organizational, and communication abilities.
- A preference for both independent work and collaborative teamwork.
AMOLF is part of NWO-I, engaging in leading fundamental research on the physics of complex forms of matter and the creation of new functional materials, in collaboration with academic and industrial partners. The institute is situated in a vibrant research community.
The Photonic Materials group, led by a distinguished professor, investigates light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. This group comprises an international team of researchers who thrive in a collaborative environment enriched with social activities. Regular group meetings, departmental colloquia, and journal clubs foster a dynamic exchange of ideas and knowledge.
Our group is integrated into AMOLF's Nanophotonics and Light Management research centers, which consist of multiple research teams sharing advanced facilities for nanofabrication and characterization.
