Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland Universiteit van Amsterdam Voltijd

Position Overview

This research initiative aims to establish and utilize an advanced computational framework to forecast the effects of nanoplastics on protein functionality. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Automating the identification of descriptors for chemical and conformational changes in proteins interacting with nanoplastics;
  • Executing machine learning-enhanced free-energy assessments;
  • Developing predictive models to efficiently evaluate nanoplastic-induced alterations in a protein's free-energy landscape;
  • Applying the computational framework to a variety of nanoplastics and proteins to provide actionable insights for healthcare facilities, policymakers, and plastic producers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in independent research within the Computational Soft Matter Laboratory;
  • Collaborate with the Computational Chemistry team at HIMS, the Computational Science Laboratory at IvI, and experimental groups at HIMS, the Institute of Physics (IoP), and the Amsterdam University Medical Center (UMC);
  • Publish and present findings in international scientific venues, including peer-reviewed journals, books, and conferences;
  • Assist in supervising undergraduate and master's student projects;
  • Participate in the educational activities of the department.

Candidate Profile:

  • A Master’s degree in a scientific discipline, ideally in physics, engineering physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or computational science with a focus on natural sciences;
  • A solid foundation in physics, chemistry, and/or computational science;
  • Preferred experience in molecular simulation;
  • Preferred experience in machine learning;
  • Proficient programming skills;
  • Strong communication abilities in both spoken and written English;
  • Demonstrated initiative and effective time management skills;
  • Interest in collaborating with students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral researchers in related projects and research groups both domestically and internationally.

What We Offer:

A temporary contract for 38 hours per week over a period of 4 years (initially for 18 months, with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance). This position is expected to culminate in a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be created, including participation in courses and (international) meetings. You will also be expected to assist in teaching undergraduate and master's students.

The gross monthly salary, based on a 38-hour workweek and contingent on relevant experience, ranges between €2,000 and €3,000. The University of Amsterdam also provides a comprehensive benefits package, including an 8% holiday allowance and an annual bonus of 8.3%. The applicable UFO profile name and level will be determined.

The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities applies.

In addition to the salary and a dynamic work environment at Science Park, we offer numerous additional benefits:

  • Annual holiday hours (based on full-time employment) and extra leave between Christmas and New Year;
  • A variety of courses available through our Teaching and Learning Centre;
  • A complete educational program tailored for PhD candidates;
  • Leadership training opportunities for academic staff;
  • Courses on time management, stress management, and access to an online learning platform with numerous courses;
  • 7 weeks of partner leave with full salary;
  • Partially paid parental leave;
  • Options for establishing a home office;
  • Pension plan with ABP, with the University covering two-thirds of the contribution;
  • Opportunities to enroll in Dutch language courses.
