About the Job

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team in the Department of Architectural History and Heritage Studies. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on their own research project as part of our research team, "Concrete Colonialism: Architecture and Heritage in Indonesia around Independence". This project focuses on examining the built environment and heritage formation before, during, and after the transition to independence in Indonesia using a material lens.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct archival research and/or fieldwork to gather data for your PhD project.
  • Develop a track record of publishing monographs, edited volumes or in academic journals.
  • Present intermediate research results at workshops and conferences in the Netherlands and abroad.
  • Organize project workshops, conferences, and creative events with project team members.
  • Participate in the AHM and Faculty of Humanities PhD training programmes.
Requirements
  • A completed Master's degree in the History of Architecture, Heritage Studies, or a related Humanities discipline.
  • Strong research skills demonstrated by a Master's thesis.
  • A strong cooperative attitude and willingness to engage in collaborative research.
  • Interest in communicating academic research to non-academic audiences.
What We Offer

We offer a temporary employment contract for 48 months. The first contract is for 16 months, with an extension for the following 32 months contingent on a positive performance evaluation within the first 12 months. Your salary is €2,420 gross per month in the first year, increasing to a maximum of €3,210 gross per month in the last year, based on a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8.3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. You will also receive a tuition fee waiver, free access to courses offered by the Graduate School of Humanities and the Dutch National Research Schools, and excellent possibilities for further professional development and education.
