Two Lecturers in Literary and Cultural Analysis

We are looking for two lecturers in Literary and Cultural Analysis, on a temporary contract for four years. You will be working at the Literary Studies and Linguistics Department, more specifically at Literary and Cultural Analysis, which comprises various chair groups responsible for the BA Literary and Cultural Analysis (for the curriculum, see: Opleiding | UvA Studiegids 2023 - 2024).

What are you going to do?

You will be teaching various courses at the Bachelor’s in Literary and Cultural Analysis. Your educational duties will also include supervising BA theses.

You will teach courses across the interdisciplinary field of Literary and Cultural Analysis, dedicated to teaching on contemporary culture, the arts, and literature at the intersection of politics and philosophy. We try to make sense of and reflect on works of literature, art, and (popular) culture in close relation to contemporary controversies and developments.

We draw from and develop theories rooted in experience (gender and queer studies, disability studies, affect and memory studies), environment and world (environmental humanities, post- and decolonial studies, world literature, infrastructure studies, media archaeology) and interdisciplinary analysis (cultural studies, comparative literature, continental philosophy). Central to our programmes is the hands-on engagement – through concept-driven close readings – with concrete cultural objects from Global Norths and Global Souths: visual art; films; poems; novels; fashion; television series; art installations; social media; and performances; but also culturally significant phenomena such as social movements and environmental or technological transformations.

You will be mentored by the coordinator of the BA Literary and Cultural Analysis.

Tasks and responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the lecturer or senior lecturer, you will be teaching at the BA Literary and Cultural Analysis. This will include:

teaching lectures, seminars and tutorials;

• supervising Bachelor’s theses;
• attending meetings and lectures, preparing for teaching, updating and translating course materials or assignments and selecting teaching methods, in consultation with colleagues and the senior lecturer;
• marking (final) assignments, theses and papers, providing input on tests and test questions and entering marks;
• coordinating practical matters around your own teaching working group (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students);
• providing other individual supervision to students (mentoring, coaching and supervising internships).

  What do you have to offer?

  You enjoy working closely with others to teach modules in the broad interdisciplinary field of literary and cultural analysis. You actively reflect on your teaching and are able to make adjustments, in consultation with other (senior) lecturers, when you notice that something is not working or other lecturers or students indicate this in their feedback. You are willing and able to teach on a variety of cultural objects/phenomena and theories from Global Norths and Global Souths, including those outside your comfort zone. You are committed to fostering an inclusive classroom.

  Your experience and profile:

  Candidates need to have the following qualifications:

  • you have an academic degree in a relevant discipline;
  • you have attained the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you have not attained the UTQ you are required to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment contract and obtain the certificate within three years of employment;
  • you are pedagogically/didactically competent (able to cater to students’ starting situation, to teach a curriculum that has already been developed, to supervise students and to make an active contribution in meetings with fellow lecturers);

    you have a good command of the Dutch language. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer the opportunity to take and pass the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II;

    you are able to teach in English.

    Ability to teach in Dutch – or to acquire this skill by September 2025, when the BA Literary and Cultural Analysis will add a Dutch track – will be considered a plus.

    What can we offer you?

    We offer temporary employment for a period of four years with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 22,8 hours or 30.4 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 August 2024.

    Your salary, depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between € 3,226 to € 5,090 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
