Delft, Zuid-Holland, Nederland TU Delft Voltijd
Job description

For their research, professors, PhD- and master-students, and postdocs use our high-quality Macro Mechanics Lab, that is part of the department of Engineering Structures. Our researchers are at the forefront of developing entirely new, sustainable materials, structures, and infrastructures. Applications range from offshore wind farms and bridges to road construction and railways. As a lab technician at TU Delft, you enable their research with unique setups and expert guidance and advice.

The varied and ever-evolving research demands custom-made setups with the most advanced equipment. Setups can be as large as a complete house wall, for experiments focused on earthquakes in Groningen. And what about testing forces on anchor cables for offshore platforms? Within such multidisciplinary projects, you take the lead in the measurement, control, and control technology of the setups. Based on the needs of the researchers, you design, build, and test the setups. In complex experiments and safety risks, you also conduct experiments in collaboration with the researcher. Additionally, you instruct users on the safe use and operation of the setups and mentor master-students.

Your home base is the internationally diverse and multidisciplinary team of 14 lab technicians. In our team, you play an important role in our shared goal: optimizing the Macro Mechanics Lab with the latest technology for high-quality and safe research. Naturally, you maintain and update your measuring equipment and software. You also learn all about the latest techniques and apply them in your projects. Our disciplines are complementary, and we learn a lot from each other by regularly exchanging knowledge and ideas. You willl find an open, informal atmosphere with us and get a lot of space and flexibility for your education and development. We help each other with the challenges that come with working with the latest technologies. And we appreciate your initiatives

The Engineering Structures department focuses on developing resilient, smart, and sustainable structures and infrastructure. Our goal is to meet societal demands in transport, energy transition, and sustainable reuse of structures and materials. Research themes include the dynamics of structures, material mechanics related to climate change, modeling and design of railway systems, multiscale modeling of road materials and structures, material reuse, construction and component assessment methods, smart monitoring techniques, design methods, replacement and renovation of civil infrastructure, and development of new materials and maintenance techniques. Our unique Macro Mechanics Laboratory facilities support large-scale tests, monitoring, and modeling of structures to facilitate the implementation of innovations. The department delivers both groundbreaking research and high-quality education for bachelor's and master's students. As a team, we represent various backgrounds, skills, and viewpoints. We promote an inclusive culture because our combined identities, attitudes, and ambitions broaden our perspective and make us stronger.

Read more about the of the Engineering Structures department.

Requirements
  • You have a bachelor's degree (HBO) in mechatronics or another relevant field. If you do not yet have sufficient knowledge of solid mechanics, you will quickly learn what you need for your work.
  • You have practical knowledge of programming PID controllers and PLCs.
  • You are familiar with various types of laboratory analyses and field measurements.
  • Your communication and social skills help you in your interactions with researchers and direct colleagues. You also manage expectations, ensuring experiments are realistic.
  • You enjoy brainstorming with researchers and applying your enthusiasm and technical knowledge to setups that have not been designed before.
  • You take initiative to further improve research in our lab and introduce new techniques, with a focus on safety.
  • You speak and write Dutch and English proficiently.

If you have a strong background in measurement, control, and automation engineering and believe this position suits you perfectly but you do not yet meet all the requirements, we would still like to meet you, as you can also learn on the job with us.

Conditions of employment
  • Duration of contract is 1 year with prospect of permanent.
  • A job of 32-40 hours per week.

  • An excellent pension scheme via the ABP.
  • The possibility to compile an individual employment package every year.
  • Discount with health insurers.
  • Flexible working week.
  • Every year, 232 leave hours (at 38 hours). You can also sell or buy additional leave hours via the individual choice budget.
  • Plenty of opportunities for education, training and courses.
