We are seeking a motivated student to undertake a theoretical thesis focused on the valorisation of co-products and waste from the brewing industry.
This project aims to compile internal and external experiences in HEINEKEN with innovative methods for converting waste materials into valuable resources, contributing to sustainability and circular economy goals.
The thesis will investigate various waste streams within the brewing industry, including but not limited to:Brewer's Surplus Yeast, Brewer's Spent Grain, Paper Labels, Wastewater Treatment Plant Sludge, among others.
The internship
The goal is to compile current knowledge, to identify and to evaluate potential valorisation pathways for these materials, including but not limited to: Biotechnological applications, energy recovery, methods, Material recycling and re-use, Environmental impact assessments.
In this internship you will be responsible for:
- Conduct a comprehensive literature review on the valorisation of brewing industry waste.
- Develop theoretical frameworks and models for waste conversion processes.
- Analyse existing case studies and technologies.
- Propose innovative and sustainable solutions for waste valorisation including a decision tree and drivers for the decision.
- Prepare a detailed thesis document presenting findings, methodologies, compilation of valorisation options, decision tree, and recommendations.

The terms of employment
- Your starting date any time after 1st July 202
- The internship is fulltime
- The duration of the internship is 5 or 6 months (in consultation with your internship supervisor)
- You will be based in our new office at Schiphol.
- You will receive an internship fee of €500 (WO & HBO)
- You will enjoy 2 vacation days per month (based on fulltime)
- If you do not have a student OV product, your commuting expenses will be fully reimbursed
Together with a diverse group of interns from different departments you will start your internship at HEINEKEN. Together you will be introduced to the organization. Furthermore, you can organize fun activities with your fellow interns.
The unique you
You are enrolled in a Master's program in Environmental Science, Waste Management, Chemical Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, or a related field and you have the following:
- Strong understanding of waste management and sustainability principles.
- Excellent research and analytical skills
- Proficiency in scientific writing and data interpretation
- Familiarity with the brewing industry is an advantage
- Highly motivated and selfdriven
- Strong problemsolving skills
- Ability to work independently and in a cross functional team as well
- Proficiency in English is a must
Conditions of HEINEKEN
- You are enrolled at an educational institution.
- In the case of non-EU nationality, you must be registered as an intern with a Dutch educational institution.
- In case of EU nationality, you may also be registered as an intern at educational institutions outside the EU.
- Physical presence at the location of your internship. We believe that you learn most when you can work directly with your colleagues. It is therefore not possible to work completely remote and HEINEKEN does not facilitate housing.
