- Deadline 5 Jul 2024We are searching for a fullyfinanced postdoctoral researcher with background in biomaterial sciences and polymer chemistry to support the expanding interdisciplinary activities of our department. The postdoc will be part of a research project aiming at developing a TumoronChip (ToC) platform incorporating sensing hydrogel matrices, to correlate the microenvironment and response to (immuno)therapy (SMART-ToC). This project involves a transdisciplinary consortium with several academic, industrial and societal partners.
Specifically, as part of the team, you will be in charge of developing animal-free smart hydrogel matrices for a tumor-on-chip platform.
These matrices will be designed to exhibit fine-tunable properties (e.g., mechanical strength, cell-adhesion, degradability rate) and incorporate luminescent sensors to map in real-time pH, oxygen tension and mechanical forces in 3D.
Moreover, you will work in close connection with a PhD student (hired at the AMBER group at the UT, focusing on the microfluidic and engineering aspects of the project), a Postdoc (hired at Radboudumc, devoted to the validation of the platform for immune-based treatments), and a researcher in social sciences (hired at Saxion, University of Applied Sciences, devoted to the ethical assessment and development of educational material).
Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with other partners in the consortium via short research stays abroad through academic and possible industrial placements, and participate in some of the management activities of the consortium (write reports, communicate with other partners and stakeholders, organize update meetings, etc).
Morover, you will be involved in activities (primarily organized by a researcher at Saxion), related to the societal and ethical assessment of the developed technologies and reflecting about their societal acceptance, as well as in communication and dissemination activities to the scientific public and beyond.
Your profile:
Qualifications, Education and Experience
- You have a PhD with excellent knowledge in polymer or macromolecular chemistry, synthesis and characterization of hydrogels for cell biology and microscopy imaging.
- You (preferably) have relevant working experience in (some) of these fields: biomaterial analysis, analytical chemistry, soft matter, organonchip, tissue engineering.
- You have demonstrated experience in (co)supervising BSc/MSc students.
- You enjoy working in a dynamic environment, where focused work is alternated with responding to adhoc requests and questions, and have a proactive attitude.
- You can work independently as well as in a team, and you have a focused and flexible mindset.
- You like to interact with others and have excellent communication skills to team members and diverse stakeholders (industrial, societal, etc).

Our offer:
- Fulltime position for 2 years

- gross per month in case of a fulltime employment.

About the department:
Tumor tissues are highly heterogeneous and vary with disease progression. Heterogeneity, as reported for certain microenvironmental parameters (oxygen, pH, tissue stiffness), often correlates with poor treatment success. Yet, current in-vitro/in-vivo tumor models do not properly incorporate such spatio-temporal variations and thus have limited translational value.
