Background information:

Within ASML, the sector Development & Engineering (D&E) is responsible for the specification and the development of ASML products.

This assignment is within the department of D&E MM EUV Optics & Dynamics, responsible for the dynamics and control architecture for the illumination & projection system within EUV scanners.

Department of Mechatronics and Measurement Systems, that houses all of the mechatronics experts for the entire EUV & DUV scanners.


Your assignment:

The Projection Optics Box (POB) is an essential part of the ASML lithography machine.

It projects a column of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light from the reticle to the wafer, using mirrors with sub-nanometer positioning accuracy.

Misalignment of the mirrors leads to a projection error on the wafer and ultimately to defective chips.

Most mirrors in the POB are actively controlled to minimize the position error. The position of the mirrors is measured with respect to the Sensor Frame. Control loops dampen the motion of the Sensor Frame to minimize the observed error of the mirrors.


Currently, the mirror and sensor frame control loops have separate (control) objectives, but both contribute to the same projection error.

Ideally, the control architecture accounts for the joint nature of the system.

This assignment is a first step towards a joint POB control objective.

Intern in this team is responsible for:

  • Focusing on the control loops of the Sensor Frame and a single mirror, the aim of this assignment is to develop controllers with the joint control objective of minimizing the mirror position errors.
  • This is a MIMO control problem as the mirror and the Sensor Frame are controlled in six degrees of freedom, creating a 12 by 12 system which can be synthesized based on available models.
  • This offers the opportunity for advanced control solutions such as feedthrough/feedforward control or any other promising MIMO control strategy.


This is an ASML internship assignment, however, as control solutions for the Projection Optics Box are jointly develop by ASML and Nobleo Technology, there are opportunities to familiarize with both companies during your project.


Your profile:

To be a great match for this role, ideally you are:

  • Master's student in Mechanical Engineering, with specialization in dynamics & control, control system technology, or related disciplines.
  • Have affinity towards the topic of system theory for control, advanced motion control.
  • Proficiency in using MATLAB Simulink programming.
  • A team player, a selfstarter, complimented with cando mentality.
  • Fluent in English.

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • This is a non-thesis related assignment, for minimum 4-7 months starting ASAP (June 2024).
  • Working for minimum 32 hours per week, with a maximum of 40.
  • You are enrolled at a higher education institution for the entire duration of the internship.
  • You need to be located in the Netherlands to be perform your internship. In case you 're currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, please include in your CV/motivation letter willingness to relocate.
