The Ethics Institute of Utrecht University's Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies is looking for a researcher with expertise in normative ethics, metaethics, or methodologies of applied ethics to join a 3-year, full-time postdoctoral project on Mutual Justification and Disruptive Technology as part of the inter-university Gravitation consortium Ethics of Socially Disruptive Technology (ESDiT).
What will you do?We are seeking a philosopher interested in pursuing independent research related to socially disruptive technologies. The project focuses on examining ethical challenges and moral disorientation that arise from emerging technologies, questioning concepts like 'personhood' and 'ethical discourse participant'. The aim is to explore philosophical approaches that address moral uncertainty and dynamism associated with disruptive technologies.
Ethicists of technology analyze situations of uncertainty and change, emphasizing pragmatic procedures for restoring social cooperation. This project aims to bridge philosophical traditions and address how morality adapts to technological advancements.
The central objective is to explore the obligation to mutually justify responses to disruptive technologies and the moral challenges they pose. The postdoc will conduct research to support the ESDiT consortium's goals.
This postdoctoral position is part of a ten-year international research programme focusing on ethics, philosophy, technology, and social sciences, including research lines such as 'Nature, Life and Human Intervention' and 'The Human Condition'.
