Description

The Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration Programmes (D/HRE) is a programme directorate within ESA. Through a partnership between humans and robots, D/HRE is dedicated to exploring destinations in space in which humans are already living and working – or will live and work in the future – for the purpose of scientific research, economic development, international cooperation and public inspiration.

The European Service Module (ESM) is a crucial European contribution to NASA's Artemis programme, which aims to return humans to the Moon. It provides core functions to the Orion Multi-purpose Crew Vehicle spacecraft, including propulsion, power, thermal control, and consumables such as oxygen and water for the life support system. ESA will provide several ESMs to NASA for upcoming exploration missions to the Moon.

As Mission and Performance System Engineer, you will be a member of the ESM Engineering Team within D/HRE, taking a leading role in the interface with NASA and European industry.

Duties

Your tasks and responsibilities will include:

acting as Principal Engineer for one ESM flight model by:

  • supporting the Chief Engineer with requirements baseline maintenance;
  • interfacing with NASA in respect of the technical baseline;
  • monitoring the implementation of ESM changes by industry;
  • supporting the organisation and conduct of reviews;
  • coordinating with the other members of the ESM System Engineering Team to ensure a coherent and smooth evolution of the ESM design across flight models;
  • coordinating with the technical leads in the ESM Engineering Team for the resolution of anomalies or technical issues affecting the ESM flight model;
  • following the system-level test campaigns of the ESM in coordination with the ESM AIV Team and technical leads;
  • supporting the verification process;
  • supporting the ESM Chief Engineer and the ESM Project Manager contributing to ESM ECBs and CCBs.

as a member of the ESM System Engineering Team:

  • providing support in the field of mission integration and performance system engineering, including assessment of deviations, waivers and non-conformances and supporting the verification process;
  • in coordination with the ESM Mission and Flight Operations System Engineer, interfacing with NASA in the domain of ESM mission integration, concerning the development of ESM operational functions, functional mission analysis, sequencing and utilisation, and performance, stressing performance identification, nominal and contingency design case development, assumptions and analyses;
  • supporting the NASA Orion flight operations and the subsequent post-flight analysis as part of the ESM Mission Team;
  • providing technical expertise in the areas of ESM/Orion integrated operations and performance.
Technical competencies

  • an understanding of and experience in tailoring space standards.

Previous international experience, i.e. outside your home country, as well as experience in diverse functional areas relevant to the activities of ESA, would be an asset.

In principle, recruitment will be within the advertised grade band (A2-A4). However, if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant professional experience following the completion of the master's degree, the position may be filled at A1 level.

Additionally, successful candidates will need to undergo basic screening before appointment, which will be conducted by an external background screening service, in compliance with the European Space Agency's security procedures.
