Job SummaryIn this position, you will conduct research on the project "The Influence of the Institutional Context on Corporate Philanthropy" that is part of a part-time PhD trajectory (0.6 FTE). Corporate philanthropy investment of corporate resources such as employees' time, money, network, technology and means – has become more of a norm than an exception in the current global marketplace to create positive social change. But we have little understanding of how these practices differ among various countries, regions and communities.A good understanding of how the institutional context may shape corporate philanthropic behavior and more specifically, how this context influences managerial decision-making, is lacking. So, together with you, we aim to develop a new research agenda guided by the central question: "How does the institutional context influence corporate philanthropy in Europe?". The specifics of the research agenda will be determined by you and your supervisors. Yet to illustrate potential questions, here are some examples:
  • Regulatory context: What is the influence of laws, rules, regulations and sanctions on decision-making in corporate philanthropy?
  • Cultural cognitive context: What is the influence of common beliefs, convictions and shared logic on decision-making in corporate philanthropy?
  • Normative context: How and to what extent do moral (or social) obligations help fostering and influencing decision-making in corporate philanthropy?
You will also be expected to:
  • work on contract research in related areas, such as corporate volunteering, corporate social investments, corporate social responsibility, service learning, volunteering or philanthropy (0.2 FTE).
  • support teaching activities of the department (0.2 FTE), such as guiding students in their bachelor theses, providing workshops to students and coordinating courses with professors.
RequirementsWe look forward to your application if you have:
  • A master degree in business administration, law, sociology or other field, focusing on corporate social responsibility (CSR) or (corporate) philanthropy. Current master students are welcome to apply. You can apply without having proof of obtaining your master degree, but bear in mind that proof of a master degree is a formal requirement for employment, which will only be possible if the master degree is obtained before the start of the appointment. We prefer candidates with an average grade of 8.0 or cum laude. Depending on the educational background, GMAT and an English-level check may be part of the procedure.
  • Soft skills such as empathy, a positive attitude, teamwork, resilience, ability to adapt and learn from criticism, good communication skills and perseverance.
  • A proven interest in corporate social responsibility or corporate philanthropy.
  • An interest in empirical research and interdisciplinary research.
  • An appreciation for academic research linked to real-world problems to create impact both to the academic community and the business community.
  • Willingness to develop a small teaching portfolio.
  • Excellent oral and written skills in English. Speaking Dutch is preferred as you will work closely with local organisations.
Conditions of Employment
  • The position is a 1 FTE research and teaching position (0,8 FTE negotiable), in which you will work on your PhD thesis, as well as on diverse smaller research projects and teaching activities. We will support you in your professional development by facilitating you through a state-of-the-art, part-time PhD program which allows you to develop excellent research skills.
