who are you

We are looking for an HBO or higher student, who gets energized from brainstorming, coming up with new ideas and working with nice colleagues.
You often may implement the ideas you come up with. We also expect you to be a team player as well as an independent worker.

It is an advantage if you have previous internship or work experience, but we can also teach you the tricks of the trade. Because we are an international organization, it is essential that you have a good command of both Dutch and English.

In addition, you also meet the following requirements:

  • Fluent in Dutch and English;
  • Available for minimal 32 hours (preferably 40 hours).
  • Experience with Python is considered a plus;
what will you do

This internship project focuses on optimizing our current machine learning system for automated quality inspection. The goal is to achieve a highly independent machine that handles product loading and inspection autonomously, reducing operator workload, improving quality consistency, and increasing production output.

The project will leverage advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques. Here's a breakdown of the key phases:
1. System Familiarization and Software Exploration (Python Skills); Analyze the capabilities of the pre-built machine. Learning the functionalities, navigation through the user interface and data output formats of the pre-built software.
2. Leveraging AI for Faster Programming and Adaptability; Fine-tuning the chosen RL model using your labeled data to specifically fit your robot arm and product variations. Exploring integrating AI techniques to optimize the trajectories of the robotic arm in real-time.
3. User Interface (UI) Optimization for Faster Adoption; Collaborate with the design team on a user interface that simplifies interaction with the AI-powered system.
4. System Configuration and Testing; Integration, testing and pptimization and deliverables.

This project offers an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of optimizing our quality control process through cutting-edge AI and machine learning techniques.
Throughout this internship, you will gain valuable experience in:

  • Applying Python for data manipulation and potentially scripting automation tasks

Mentor Medical Systems is a manufacturer and supplier of breast implants and is part of the international Johnson & Johnson group.
The office in Leiden develops and produces high-quality implants which are used in plastic surgery all over the world.

During your internship you will work independently. You will be supervised by Siard Kuipers, the Innovation Development Engineer.
