PhD Position in microwave design and simulation of spin-based quantum processing units-
**_Do you love exploring new ideas in quantum computing and want to positively impact the world by developing new groundbreaking innovation? We're seeking a motivated person to join us as a PhD research._**

Job description

We are offering a full-time PhD position in the area of microwave design and simulation of spin based quantum processing units. We're working on the realization of a solid design and simulation platform for quantum processing unit based on spin technology. As a PhD researcher, you'll be at the forefront of this exciting journey, focusing on design and simulation of this stimulating QPU platforms.

The primary objective of this research program is to create a solid framework to understand the electromagnetic (EM) properties of spin qubits in solid-state systems to support the development of the next generation of Quantum Processing Unit (QPU). In terms of QPU design, the research focuses on the interaction between spin qubits and a superconducting resonator, aiming to explore optimal connectivity through the development of novel coupling architectures and to understand their decoherence and unwanted coupling mechanisms. Simultaneously, from the hardware perspective, the focus will be on the fabrication, and packaging of this Quantum Processing Unit (QPU) in alignment with the proposed architecture.

Along with developing novel designs and investigating their theoretical properties, you will also realize this chip using Universities cleanroom facilities, the Kavli Nanolab (KNL) and the Else Kooi Laboratory (EKL). Within this project you will work closely with other researchers from QuTech and Microelectronics department of TU-Delft. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to shape your research project according to your specific interests and expertise. This project is a part of the European flagship program, “Quantum Large Scale Integration in Silicon (QLSI)’’.

Besides carrying out theoretical and experimental research and working on scientific articles, you will be expected to actively participate in seminars and discussions with colleagues from the department and with industrial partners, as well as present your findings at (inter)national conferences or workshops. Here you can get a glimpse of our way of working.

**Requirements**:
You need to be a:

- Curious Learner: You're eager to learn and explore, holding a Master's degree (MSc) in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field. You're passionate about solving real-world problems in quantum computing.
- Analytical Thinker: You excel at analyzing complex design issues to derive meaningful insights and solutions.
- Tech-Savvy: You're comfortable navigating through microwave design software such as CST and HFSS, and are proficient in programming languages like Python.
- Collaborative Team Player: You are eager to engage with stakeholders across academia, and industry, fostering inclusive partnerships to drive innovation in quantum technology.

The following will help make you stand out:

- Prior experience with design and simulation of quantum circuits and nano-fabrication is not required, it is a plus.

Conditions of employment

From 1 September next, a salary increase of 3.7% applies due to a Collective Agreement amendment, followed by an additional 1% increase on 1 January 2025. In addition, most employees employed on 1 September 2024 will receive a one-off payment of €300 gross based on full-time employment.

The TU Delft offers a customizable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.

For international applicants, TU Delft has the Coming to Delft Service. This service provides information for new international employees to help you prepare the relocation and to settle in the Netherlands. The Coming to Delft Service offers a Dual Career Programme for partners and they organize events to expand your (social) network.
