**Background Information**:
The Opto-mechanical Competence Group of ASML is a team of opto-mechanical engineers, who engage in collecting and sharing opto-mechanical knowledge with design engineers, next to their daily work tasks. Experts from Veldhoven (NL), Wilton (US) and San Diego (US) are part of this Competence Group. Within the Group, the Optical Fiber team focuses on Opto-mechanical Design principles for optical fibers, often connected to a powerful light source. The task of the team is to gather lessons learned throughout ASML and share these by creating documentation and training materials. The primary goal is to gather and communicate designs and to make this knowledge-sharing practice as common as possible. On this topic, we have a hardware design assignment.
**Your Assignment**:
ASML uses a lot of optical fibers in its machines of different nature and sensitivity. All these fibers are shipped to ASML or its customers in special packaging, but still often these fibers get damaged in their packaging due to transport and handling. The damage is concentrated in broken fibers and damaged fiber tips, rendering the optical fiber useless. This means that the current packaging in combination with the fiber design and protection is not sufficient. We want to reduce the number of transports related to damaged optical fibers, so the packaging must be investigated and if possible improved.
The goal of the assignment is to investigate the transport related fiber damage in relation to the packaging and transport conditions. When this is clearer - then the next step will be to propose some concept design improvements and, if time allows, make some prototypes.
**Your tasks may include, but are not limited to**:
- Familiarize yourself with existing fiber packaging and related design standards;
- Investigate transport and packaging related optical fiber damage;
- Investigate how packaging can be improved and propose design concepts;
- Prepare drawings and documentation (so-called TPD), which can be used to get the packaging modified;
- Document and evaluate the test procedure;
- Order, build and test the design (if timing allows).
**Your Profile**:
To be a match for this internship, you:
- Are pursuing your bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related;
- Are solution-oriented and have a hands-on mentality;
- Have experience with/ an interest in opto-mechanical designs;
- Have some CAD modelling experience (preferably NX);
- Have good English communication skills (verbal and written).
This is a graduation/apprentice internship for 4-5 days a week with a duration of 4 to 6 months. The start date is around September.
**Please note that we can only consider students who are enrolled at a school for the entire duration of the internship.**
