**Postdoc Thyroid Lab**:

- Closing date 16-09-2024- 36.01.24.TD1**Job description**:
Our group has obtained exciting results indicating a new metabolism pathway of thyroid hormones, potentially leading to a plethora of new hormones. This project aims to uncover a new form of thyroid hormone metabolism as a novel and physiological relevant pathway.

This postdoctoral training period enables you to learn the ins and outs of thyroid hormone signaling and to contribute an important next step to current knowledge in the field.

**Work environment**:
The Department of Internal Medicine is a large department with 9 research laboratories. Our mission is to pioneer innovation in research, education and care by bringing scientific discoveries to the patient.

The Thyroid lab has a longstanding interest in cellular thyroid hormone signaling. Our lab has identified key players in thyroid hormone signaling as well as discovered a number of disorders resulting from defects in cellular thyroid hormone regulation.

Our lab takes a truly translational approach, ranging from molecular studies to utilization of patient-derived iPSCs to model disorders and to testing therapeutic possibilities. After the discovery of MCT8 as a thyroid hormone transporter (2003), the identification of the first patients (2004), we obtained positive results in preclinical studies (2014) with a thyroid hormone analog (Triac) as a potential treatment for MCT8 deficiency. Following our investigator-initiated trial (2019), this molecule is currently taken to the market as a drug for this devastating disorder.

Although it has been recognized for decades that Triac is also endogenously produced, the pathways are unknown. This project aims to identify the biochemical cascade of thyroid hormone side chain metabolism and to determine its biological role. Different methods and technologies will be employed in this project, including LC-MS/MS, CRISPR-Cas and iPSC technologies.
