Thesis internship in new technologies for injection molding at Philips Drachten
**Your role**:
You will be participating in the Technology Team - Architecture, Molding and Decoration at Philips Drachten. This department is responsible for optimizing and developing manufacturing methods to help our innovation departments, as well as production sites with challenges in cost and make-ability. You will be working in the _injection molding_ branch of this team. You will get the opportunity to work in one of the following fields, depending on the student’s interest:
- ** Ultrasonic sensors**: Ultrasonic sensors offer the possibility to investigate the _frozen layer growth_ of plastic parts. These sensors are new in the industry but offer great potential in defect detection and simulation verification. The student will dive into the possibilities of these sensors in our prototyping laboratory.
- ** Venting through porous steel**: using metal 3D printing, we can print porous structures in molds to improve venting and enable new designs. This is also a new technology that has many uncertainties, such as life time, performance and design rules. The student will investigate these topics in our prototyping laboratory using a test mold, simulation and (multiple) sensors.
- ** Virtual DoEs**:we design our products on the edge of what is possible, using tools such as flow simulation of plastics. Simulation software typically only has one data set for a material but this is only an average and does not account for batch to batch differences. The student will investigate how differences in material properties can be modelled using simulation and our test facility.
As a graduate (thesis) intern your main responsibilities are:
- Write a research proposal and aligning it with multiple stakeholders
- Perform physical experiments according to a defined test plan
- Define and perform a validation routine of the findings
- Advise on how findings can be used to improve product quality, price or performance
**You're the right fit if**:
We prefer students able to start around Feb/March 2025 for a minimum of 5 months.
- you study towards your Bachelor or Master in: Mechanical Engineering/ Material Science, Physics;
- Fluent in English (written and verbal);
- Experience with performing hands on experiments & simulations if needed;
- Eye for detail and curious nature;
- Hands on mentality, team player and result driven;
- Entrepreneurial mindset and not afraid to approach or present to colleagues.
