Job Description

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent medical humanitarian organisation that provides assistance to people worldwide, regardless of their background, religion or political convictions. Our primary goal is to save lives and offer medical care to victims of disasters, wars and epidemics. We work closely with local staff to provide direct support to the population. Additionally, we advocate for those in power, including governments and international organisations, to address the abuses we encounter during our work.

MSF Operational Centre Amsterdam (OCA) currently operates medical humanitarian interventions in 25 countries. Each year, we deploy over 800 internationally mobile staff and employ approximately 12,000 locally recruited staff. Our headquarters in Amsterdam supports the projects with around 350 employees.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide humanitarian affairs support and advocacy management/coordination to emergency responses in the field (90%).
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of advocacy strategies in emergency missions by supporting the Country/Emergency Management Team in the analysis of context, security, humanitarian situation, overall response and implementation of advocacy activities, to improve the medical humanitarian and human rights situation among the population.
  • Support the Head of Mission/Emergency Coordinator and project coordinators in the analysis of data collected, in order to better orientate the programmes and projects, to provide an optimal response to population needs.
  • Participate in the elaboration and updating of the country and local risk analysis.
  • Collaborate with the HoM/EmCo, the Operational/Humanitarian Affairs Department at HQ and other relevant parties to develop a coherent global strategy, in order to address the humanitarian situation.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of training programs for emergency staff.
Requirements
  • Degree in Law, Humanitarian affairs, Political or Social Sciences or related university degree.
  • Previous working experience of at least two years in research, analysis or advocacy.
  • Indicative 18 months field experience with one of the MSF sections in at least two different projects, of which at least one emergency project.
  • 'Can do mentality', creative, and capacity to motivate others and lead a team into action.
  • Knowledge of standard software within MSF-OCA (word/excel/outlook express).
  • Willingness to travel to any required area, frequently at short notice.
  • Proven organisational skills, diplomatic skills and experience with the representation of Médecins sans Frontières.
  • A flexible and solution-oriented mentality, and the ability to be decisive in chaotic circumstances.
  • Fluent in English language.
Desirable Requirements
  • French & Arabic speaking (as well as others).
  • Experience in various emergency responses.
  • Experience in high security and middle-income contexts.
  • Knowledge and experience using OCA standard data tools.
  • Knowledge of qualitative research methods and analysis.
What We Offer
  • A full-time appointment for 1 year with a potential option to renew.
  • Salary depends on three main factors: domicile, level of responsibility and experience on the job. Candidate's domicile determines which MSF section will act as employer.
