Image segmentation involves identifying and isolating specific objects or areas of interest within images. This process can enhance the extraction of relevant information, which can be utilized for various applications, including human action recognition, object tracking, and background removal. When automated, image segmentation becomes a powerful asset across numerous fields, such as medical imaging, autonomous driving, agriculture, and surveillance.
Conversely, interpretable part-prototype models have emerged as a focal point in computer vision research. These models learn to identify prototypical components within images and utilize a decision tree-like approach to derive predictions, where each step corresponds to different prototypes. Consequently, part-prototype models are inherently explainable, combining prediction with interpretability.
Traditionally, image segmentation has been paired with prior image classification and object detection techniques. While part-prototype models have primarily been applied to image classification and, to a lesser extent, object detection, their application in object segmentation remains largely unexplored in public research.
Project Objective
The aim of this project is to investigate the potential of interpretable part-prototype models and to create an innovative architecture that applies the part-prototype mechanism to image segmentation tasks.
