Position Overview
The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is offering a PhD position focused on the intricate dynamics of reference systems in language. This research aims to explore how various languages utilize reference mechanisms, such as demonstratives and pronouns, to facilitate communication and joint attention among speakers.
Research Objectives
The project will delve into key questions, including:
- How do speakers from diverse linguistic backgrounds employ reference systems and gestures when indicating objects in varying contexts?
- In what ways do these speakers maintain joint attention during the production and interpretation of referential expressions?
This investigation will not target a specific language but will examine potential cross-linguistic variations, such as the distinctions in demonstrative systems found in languages like Portuguese and Turkish.
Methodological Approach
The research will employ a range of methodologies, including the compilation of a corpus of naturalistic dialogue interactions. This corpus will serve as a foundation for analyzing the interplay between verbal reference systems and accompanying gestural and eye gaze behaviors, utilizing advanced techniques such as kinematic and mobile eye-tracking.
Additionally, the project will incorporate targeted augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) studies to experimentally validate theoretical propositions in settings that balance experimental rigor with ecological authenticity.
Team Composition
The project will be conducted by a multidisciplinary team, including experts in human cross-linguistic multimodal language use, experimental pragmatics, and multimodal communication methodologies.
Candidate Profile
Ideal candidates should possess:
- A high-quality Research Master's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., psycholinguistics, cognitive science, linguistics).
- Linguistic knowledge of one or more target languages with distinct reference systems.
- Experience in corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, or multimodal communication.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Familiarity with programming and data analysis tools.
- A collaborative spirit and a willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research.
What We Offer
The position includes a full-time commitment with a competitive salary, generous holiday allowances, and access to state-of-the-art research facilities. PhD candidates will benefit from comprehensive training, personal supervision, and opportunities for professional development, ensuring a robust foundation for an academic career.
