Postdoctoral Researcher in Cultural Heritage X-ray Techniques

2 maanden geleden

Delft, Zuid-Holland, Nederland TU Delft Voltijd
Job Overview

At TU Delft, we are at the forefront of innovation in X-ray based methodologies, utilizing cutting-edge synchrotron radiation sources. Our initiative aims to enhance access to these exceptional resources for researchers in the Netherlands, who currently face limitations due to the lack of direct involvement in prominent research centers.

The Smart*Light project is a collaborative effort among several institutions in the Netherlands and Flanders, focused on developing a compact X-ray instrument that integrates an intense, energy-tunable X-ray source, optics, and detectors. This state-of-the-art source leverages the Inverse Compton Effect, transforming visible laser light into a coherent X-ray beam with remarkable precision.

Key Responsibilities

As a pivotal member of our team, your primary responsibility will be to construct and validate the experimental endstation for the Smart*Light project. This facility will facilitate the characterization of the X-ray beam and conduct preliminary experiments centered on cultural heritage artifacts, including art and archaeological items. Your tasks will encompass:

  • Conducting laboratory tests with X-ray tubes to evaluate various components.
  • Integrating these components into the control software.
  • Assessing spectroscopic performance metrics.
  • Optimizing the instrument's functionality.
  • Demonstrating the instrument's capabilities through initial experiments.

Your insights from these early experiments will be instrumental in strategizing future enhancements for the Smart*Light project, particularly in the areas of optics and beam shaping.

Collaboration and Development

You will collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator, M. Alfeld, and the team at TU Eindhoven to facilitate the installation of the endstation. Opportunities to mentor Master’s students and engage in independent research related to spectroscopy and cultural heritage will also be available.

Qualifications
  • A PhD in a relevant field such as physics, chemistry, or materials science.
  • Experience in operating and configuring X-ray instruments for spectrometry, diffraction, or imaging.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Proficiency in programming, particularly in Python, or a willingness to learn.
  • Strong command of English; knowledge of Dutch is advantageous.
  • Prior experience with cultural heritage is beneficial but not mandatory.
Employment Conditions

The compensation and benefits for this position are aligned with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. TU Delft offers a customizable benefits package, including health insurance discounts and a monthly contribution for work-related expenses. Flexible working arrangements can be negotiated.
