Nijmegen, Gelderland, Nederland Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics Voltijd

Position Overview

The Multimodal Language Department at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is seeking a dedicated PhD candidate to engage in a pioneering research project focused on referential communication across languages. This project aims to explore how different languages utilize reference systems and gestures to establish joint attention in conversational contexts.

Research Objectives

The primary goals of this research include:

  • Investigating the integration of reference systems and pointing gestures by speakers of various languages when referring to objects in distinct locations.
  • Examining how speakers monitor joint attention during the production and interpretation of referential expressions.

This study will not focus on a specific language but will analyze potential cross-linguistic variations. For instance, while both Portuguese and Turkish feature a three-way demonstrative system, their usage in conjunction with gestures may differ significantly.

Methodological Approach

The research will employ a range of methodologies, including the compilation of a corpus of naturalistic dialogue interactions. This corpus will facilitate the analysis of reference systems in speech, as well as concurrent gestural and eye gaze behaviors, utilizing advanced techniques such as kinematic and mobile eye-tracking data. Additionally, the project will develop targeted augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) studies to experimentally validate theoretical claims in dynamic environments.

Research Team

The project will be supervised by an interdisciplinary team of experts:

  • Prof. Asli Özyürek - Specialist in cross-linguistic multimodal language use and processing.
  • Dr. Paula Rubio-Fernández - Expert in experimental cross-linguistic pragmatics and social cognition.
  • Dr. David Peeters - Authority in multimodal communication research utilizing experimental methods, including VR.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants should possess:

  • A high-quality Research Master's degree in a relevant field, such as psycholinguistics, cognitive science, or linguistics.
  • Linguistic knowledge of one or more target languages, with native or active proficiency considered advantageous.
  • Experience in corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, or multimodal communication.
  • Strong command of written and spoken English.
  • Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, R) and corpus-linguistic tools.
  • A willingness to collaborate in an interdisciplinary research environment.
  • A commitment to learning new methodologies in corpus linguistics and psycholinguistics.

What We Offer

The successful candidate will receive:

  • A full-time position with a competitive salary.
  • Generous holiday allowance, including public holidays.
  • Access to state-of-the-art research facilities and technical support.
  • Participation in the International Max Planck Research School for Language Sciences, offering tailored coursework and training in essential research skills.

This position represents an exceptional opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research in the field of multimodal language processing and social cognition.
