We are excited to present a fully funded Ph.D. opportunity in the innovative domain of active soft matter, concentrating on the creation of artificial microswimmers that can move and transport autonomously in three-dimensional space. We seek a highly driven and inquisitive individual who thrives on conceptual exploration and is eager to engage in original research.
Research Focus
The autonomous movement, activity, and transport of microorganisms in fluids exemplify the essential characteristics of living systems. Recently, this has sparked the emergence of a new research area known as 'active or autonomous matter,' which aims to design synthetic microswimmers endowed with remarkable capabilities such as self-propulsion, self-assembly, and environmental responsiveness. Nevertheless, the challenge remains in fabricating micron-sized artificial entities that can navigate independently in 3D.
Project Objectives
This project aims to develop a distinctive experimental model system to enhance our understanding of the dynamic self-organization of microorganisms in three dimensions, utilizing advanced optical microscopy techniques. The ultimate goal is to deepen our fundamental insights into the dynamic self-organization of microorganisms in 3D, leading to the establishment of valuable design principles that could facilitate the creation of intelligent micromachines for various technological and biomedical applications, including targeted cargo transport, environmental sensing, fluid mixing, reconfigurable materials, and active mass transport in catalysis.
Candidate Profile
- A Master's degree (or equivalent) in applied Physics, Chemistry, Biophysics, or a related field at the intersection of Physics and Chemistry is required. Candidates with a Master's in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering are also encouraged to apply, provided their thesis work relates to soft matter.
- Prior experience with experimental techniques, particularly optical microscopy and colloidal particle synthesis, is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Practical programming experience in Python, ImageJ, and/or MATLAB is highly beneficial.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are essential.
Our Offer
- This is a full-time position for a duration of four years.
