Lead Researcher in Neuropsychiatric Mechanisms

2 maanden geleden

Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience Voltijd

Max hours per week: 38.00
Max salary: 8.025
Apply until:

Are you passionate about pioneering a research group that integrates core and external funding to explore the biological foundations of neuropsychiatric disorders? Do you thrive in a collaborative environment with other research teams within a supportive and innovative institute? Are you eager to dedicate your efforts solely to research without the responsibilities of teaching? If so, this position could be an excellent fit for you.

The Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (NIN) focuses on deciphering the neural circuits and molecular mechanisms that underpin our cognitive functions and how these are altered in brain disorders. Our institute is uniquely positioned to achieve this by leveraging diverse research teams that utilize cutting-edge neurotechnologies across human, primate, and rodent models. Additionally, the NIN houses the Netherlands Brain Bank, granting access to rare post-mortem human brain tissue, including a well-documented psychiatric cohort. The NIN is committed to enhancing the collaboration between its neural circuit expertise and the Netherlands Brain Bank to better understand the pathophysiology of psychiatric conditions. To support these objectives, we are seeking a new group leader.

Key Responsibilities

We are in search of a candidate who will employ advanced molecular or computational neuroscience techniques to uncover the biological mechanisms that contribute to dysfunctions seen in psychiatric disorders. You will collaborate with fellow research teams and clinical scientists to investigate psychiatric symptoms from molecular to circuit levels. A background in molecular or computational psychiatry is advantageous, but candidates with other relevant expertise are encouraged to apply if they can demonstrate a strong rationale for utilizing the unique resources and knowledge available at the NIN to explore psychiatric disorder mechanisms.

Your Responsibilities Will Include:
  • Leading and executing fundamental research pertinent to psychiatric disorders.
  • Securing external funding for research initiatives.
  • Guiding PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers, along with managing personnel-related processes within your group.
  • Contributing meaningfully to the mission of the NIN.
  • Who are we looking for?

Ideally, you have obtained your PhD within the last decade. We will consider a 1.5-year deduction for each child when evaluating productivity across candidates to account for family commitments related to maternity/paternity. You possess an outstanding and verifiable record in scientific research, with publications in relevant academic journals. Experience in obtaining external research funding is essential. You should have excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

What We Offer
  • Laboratory funding (initial and annual lump sum)
  • Access to state-of-the-art research facilities
  • Competitive employment terms, including a minimum salary of € 5.247 and a maximum of € 8.025 gross per month for a full-time position (scale 12 to 14 Collective Labor Agreement Dutch Universities/KNAW). This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance, and pension contributions with ABP. Salary is independent of grant funding.
  • Exceptional secondary benefits: A package tailored to meet the diverse needs of employees based on their life stage, lifestyle, or career aspirations. For instance, by working an additional two hours per week, it is possible to increase the number of vacation days from 29 to 41 days per year (for full-time employment).
  • For a comprehensive overview of employment terms, please refer to the relevant web page.

The application for a Certificate of Good Conduct is part of the employment process.

About the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience

The Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience is an esteemed institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and stands as one of the leading fundamental neuroscience research institutions in the country. It conducts both basic and strategic research. The NIN boasts a robust and highly collaborative research program that emphasizes cross-species approaches to fundamental and cognitive neuroscience. Its teams have made significant discoveries in areas related to social cognition, sleep, motivation, learning, movement, vision, and decision-making. The institute also investigates how brain disorders can disrupt these functions. As a dedicated research institute, employment does not involve teaching responsibilities.

The NIN is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and expertise for in-vivo recordings in rodents (e.g., one- and two-photon microscopy, neuropixel recordings, opto- and chemo-genetics, ultrasound imaging), primates (e.g., 1000-contact point electrophysiology), and humans (e.g., 3T and 7T MRI at the Spinoza Centre, 256-channel HD-EEG sleep lab, TMS, and tDCS). It also provides excellent facilities for slice electrophysiology, viral vector technology, and high-resolution in-vitro microscopy (STED, serial section two-photon, confocal microscopy, and access to electron microscopy). Research at the NIN further includes human iPSC reprogramming and (single-cell) omics technologies. The NIN is home to the Netherlands Brain Bank, which offers access to unique post-mortem human brain tissue. Collaboration with the Amsterdam University Medical Centre's Department of Psychiatry, the largest in the Netherlands, provides excellent opportunities to access patient cohorts, as does our sleep registry pre-clinical cohort.

The NIN fosters a critical mass of neuroscientists and maintains a particularly collaborative atmosphere that encourages the sharing of expertise among research groups. The research teams comprise members from over 27 nations, with diverse backgrounds ranging from philosophy to engineering, but with a strong emphasis on biology and psychology. English serves as the working language across all research groups. Amsterdam is an internationally-oriented city, offering a progressive and easily integrative environment.

Diversity & Inclusion

The KNAW values a working environment where everyone feels welcome and appreciated. We prioritize individual quality and developmental opportunities. Together, we strive for an inclusive culture that embraces diversity. We invite candidates who can contribute to this goal through their background and experiences. In cases of equal suitability, preference will be given to candidates who enhance diversity within the Academy.
