Overview
This postdoctoral position focuses on the nanoscale examination of the electrical double layer configuration adjacent to electrode surfaces.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe role is structured for a duration of 2+1 years, aimed at the experimental advancement of in-situ and operando characterization techniques for metal electrodes.
A significant hurdle in the energy transition is the efficient conversion and storage of renewable energy into energy-dense compounds such as hydrogen, hydrocarbons, or alcohols derived from water and CO2. A critical limiting factor in enhancing these reactions is the insufficient understanding of their nanoscale mechanisms. Specifically, there is a lack of comprehensive knowledge regarding the hydrogen-bond structure and molecular dynamics in the interfacial zone near the electrode surface.
This project will leverage cutting-edge nonlinear optical femtosecond vibrational spectroscopy in conjunction with scanning probe microscopy to explore the molecular-scale water structure near an active electrode surface. Additionally, we will utilize these sophisticated techniques to analyze the dynamic distribution of ions and reactants in the vicinity of the electrode surface. Through these investigations, we aim to uncover novel insights into the architecture of the electrical double layer adjacent to a biased electrode surface, which will be instrumental in optimizing electrochemical reactions for the conversion and storage of renewable energy.
QualificationsWe seek a motivated researcher holding a PhD in experimental physics or physical chemistry.
The ideal candidate will possess experimental expertise in at least one of the following domains:
- Investigation of solid-water interfaces at the molecular level
- In-situ/operando atomic force microscopy
- Ultrafast spectroscopy
Proficiency in both verbal and written English communication is essential.
Work EnvironmentAMOLF, part of NWO-I, engages in pioneering fundamental research on the physics of complex matter forms and the creation of innovative functional materials, collaborating with both academia and industry. - This full-time position (40 hours/week) is offered for a duration of 2+1 years.
- Compensation is based on scale 10 (CAO-OI), starting at 4,065 Euros gross per month, along with a variety of employment benefits.
