Research Fellow in Robotics Ethnography

Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Voltijd

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled ethnographic researcher with a PhD focused on technology and labor. This postdoctoral role offers an opportunity to advance your research in the fascinating intersection of robotics and workplace dynamics.

Role Responsibilities

As robots become increasingly integrated into various professional settings, understanding their influence on employment is crucial. While engineers are eager to create intelligent robotic solutions to enhance efficiency and safety in tasks like cleaning and surveillance, there is a significant gap in our understanding of how these technologies are actually utilized in practice. This research initiative aims to bridge that gap through comprehensive ethnographic studies.

The successful candidate will engage in the following activities:

  • Design and implement ethnographic studies examining the development of robotics in laboratory settings and their application in real-world work environments.
  • Conduct fieldwork, perform literature reviews, and produce empirical research papers for academic conferences and journals.
  • Participate in educational activities and contribute to teaching efforts.
  • Collaborate with industry partners to organize workshops and disseminate research findings.
Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications

  • PhD in Business Administration, Management, Sociology, or a related social science discipline. Candidates nearing the completion of their PhD are encouraged to apply.
  • Proven experience with qualitative research methodologies, particularly ethnographic approaches.
  • Strong academic credentials, evidenced by publications or conference presentations.
  • Commitment to conducting high-quality qualitative research.
  • Ability to blend creative and analytical thinking.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a capacity to work collaboratively with industry stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in English is required; knowledge of Dutch is advantageous for conducting ethnographic research among Dutch-speaking participants.
What We Offer

This position presents a unique opportunity within a socially responsible organization. At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, your contributions will enhance education, research, and community service. In return, we provide:

  • A competitive salary ranging from €3,226 to €5,090 gross per month, based on experience and qualifications.

  • Generous holiday leave entitlements, with 232 hours per year for full-time employees.
  • 8% holiday allowance and an annual end-of-year bonus.
  • A robust pension scheme.
  • Options for a personalized benefits package.
  • Support for commuting expenses.
