Position Overview
The Multimodal Language Department at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is seeking a PhD candidate to explore the intricate systems of reference in language. This research will delve into how various languages utilize reference systems, such as demonstratives and pronouns, to facilitate communication and establish joint attention among speakers.
Research Focus
The project aims to address critical questions regarding:
- The integration of reference systems and pointing gestures by speakers of different languages when referring to objects in various contexts.
- The monitoring of joint attention during the production and interpretation of referential expressions across languages.
This investigation will not be limited to any specific language but will consider potential cross-linguistic variations, such as the distinct demonstrative systems found in Portuguese and Turkish.
Methodological Approach
To achieve these objectives, a comprehensive corpus of natural dialogue interactions will be compiled. This corpus will facilitate the analysis of reference systems in speech alongside concurrent gestural and eye gaze behaviors, employing advanced techniques such as kinematic and mobile eye-tracking data. Additionally, the project will incorporate targeted augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) studies to experimentally validate theoretical claims within dynamic settings that balance experimental rigor with ecological validity.
Research Team
The project will be conducted under the guidance of a multidisciplinary team, including:
- Prof. Asli Özyürek - An authority in cross-linguistic multimodal language use and processing.
- Dr. Paula Rubio-Fernández - A specialist in experimental cross-linguistic pragmatics and social cognition.
- Dr. David Peeters - An expert in multimodal communication employing experimental methodologies, including VR.
Candidate Requirements
Ideal candidates should possess:
- A high-quality Research Master's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., psycholinguistics, cognitive science, linguistics).
- Linguistic knowledge of one or more target languages with differing reference systems.
- Experience in corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, or multimodal communication.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, R) and corpus-linguistic tools.
- A willingness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and learn new methodologies.
What We Offer
The successful candidate will receive:
- A full-time position with a competitive salary.
- Generous vacation days and public holiday observance.
- Access to state-of-the-art research facilities and resources.
- Participation in the International Max Planck Research School for Language Sciences, providing comprehensive training and support for academic development.
This position represents an exceptional opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of multimodal language studies.
