About the Role

As a research assistant in our Social Brain Lab, you will play a critical part in understanding human emotions and physiological responses. You will work closely with our team to develop and refine methods for measuring empathic responses in humans, using techniques such as facial expression analysis, electrocardiogram, and startle potentiation. Your aim will be to identify the key physiological markers that distinguish empathic responses from self-distress or harm-aversion.

What You Will Do

  • You will assist in the development of new research methods and tools for analyzing physiological data
  • Work with another research assistant to examine similar readouts in rodents witnessing distress to identify generalizability of measures
  • Liaise with colleagues at UCSD's Sanford Center for Empathy and Compassion on joint projects
  • Co-author publications in open-access scientific journals
  • Prepare yourself for a competitive PhD program in affective or social neuroscience

Requirements

  • Research master's degree in neuroscience, behavioral psychology, or related fields
  • Experience with advanced data analyses and statistical inferences
  • Ability to learn new techniques and work independently
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
