Role Overview

In the contemporary landscape, deep learning methodologies are increasingly being utilized across various sectors, particularly within radar technology. Within this domain, deep learning is predominantly employed for classification tasks utilizing 2D representations of radar data, such as Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) imagery or spectrograms, which visually depict signal frequency content over time. These intermediate representations are favored for their interpretability. However, for certain applications, training deep neural networks with alternative data representations may yield superior efficiency. In some cases, it may even be advantageous to bypass intermediate representations altogether, opting instead to train networks using pulse-compressed radar data or even raw radar signals.

The primary focus of this internship is to investigate the potential of utilizing pulse-compressed or raw radar data for training deep neural networks. Key questions include: What advantages does this approach offer? What applications could benefit from this methodology? For example, is it feasible to integrate pulse compression, beamforming, and detection into a single neural network, and what are the resultant benefits? Radar measurements will be accessible for evaluating various strategies.

Expectations from Candidates

The ideal candidate is nearing completion of a degree in artificial intelligence, computer science, physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, or a related field, with a demonstrated background in signal processing or computer vision. Proficiency in programming languages such as Matlab and/or Python is essential, along with a pragmatic approach to problem-solving.
