Position Overview

This postdoctoral role is focused on the nanoscale examination of the electrical double layer structure adjacent to electrode surfaces.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will engage in a 2+1 year research project aimed at the experimental advancement of in-situ and operando characterization techniques for metal electrodes.

Addressing the critical challenge of energy transition involves the conversion and storage of sustainable energy in energy-dense compounds such as hydrogen, hydrocarbons, or alcohols derived from water and CO2. A significant barrier to enhancing the efficiency of these reactions is the insufficient understanding of their nanoscale mechanisms. In particular, there is a lack of detailed insight into the hydrogen-bond structure and molecular dynamics within the interfacial region near electrode surfaces.

This project will leverage cutting-edge nonlinear optical femtosecond vibrational spectroscopy in conjunction with scanning probe microscopy to investigate the molecular-scale water structure near an operating electrode surface. Additionally, these sophisticated techniques will be employed to analyze the dynamic distribution of ions and reactants in proximity to the electrode surface. The outcomes of this research will provide groundbreaking insights into the structure of the electrical double layer at a biased electrode surface, which is crucial for optimizing electrochemical reactions for sustainable energy conversion and storage.

This position is a collaborative effort between two research groups at AMOLF: the Ultrafast Spectroscopy group and the 3D Photovoltaics group. The successful candidate will be guided by Prof. Bakker and Prof. Alarcon-Llado and will work closely with PhD students, technicians, and fellow postdoctoral researchers from both groups. Both teams are part of the Sustainable Materials theme and the ChemSpec center of expertise at AMOLF, fostering a highly collaborative and stimulating research environment.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in experimental physics or physical chemistry.

We seek individuals with practical experience in at least one of the following domains:

  • Investigation of solid-water interfaces at the molecular level
  • In-situ/operando atomic force microscopy
  • Ultrafast spectroscopy

Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are essential.

Working Conditions

  • This full-time position (40 hours/week) is funded by the Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I) for a duration of 2+1 years.
  • Compensation is based on scale 10 (CAO-OI), starting at 4,065 Euros gross per month, along with a comprehensive benefits package.
  • AMOLF provides assistance to new international postdoctoral researchers with housing and visa applications, as well as reimbursement for transport and relocation expenses.
