Image segmentation is a crucial process for identifying and isolating specific objects or areas of interest within images. This technique allows for the precise extraction of relevant information, which can be utilized for various applications, including human action recognition, object tracking, and background removal. When automated, image segmentation becomes an invaluable asset across multiple sectors, such as medical imaging, autonomous driving, agriculture, and surveillance.
Conversely, interpretable part-prototype models have emerged as a significant focus in computer vision research. These models learn to identify prototypical components within images and utilize a decision tree-like framework to derive their predictions, where each step corresponds to different prototypes. This inherent explainability allows part-prototype models to provide both predictions and rationales.
Traditionally, image segmentation has been integrated with prior image classification and object detection tasks. While part-prototype models have primarily been applied to image classification and, to a lesser extent, object detection, their application in object segmentation remains largely unexplored in public research.
Project Objective
The aim of this project is to explore the potential of interpretable part-prototype models and to create a novel architecture that applies the part-prototype mechanism to image segmentation tasks.
