PhD Position in Constitutive Modeling for Press Forming Simulations

As part of the National Research Program Aviation in Transition, the Production Technology group at the University of Twente is seeking a PhD candidate to contribute to the development of novel constitutive models for molten unidirectionally reinforced thermoplastic composites. Your research will focus on the implementation of these models in finite element software, followed by experimental validation. The existing characterization methods and experimental dataset will serve as an excellent starting point for this task.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and implementing constitutive models for thermoplastic composites in finite element software;
  • Designing and conducting experiments to validate the models;
  • Collaborating with researchers and sharing results with industrial partners.

Requirements for the position include:

  • A Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field;
  • Experimental and theoretical skills in polymers and fiber-reinforced composites;
  • Experience with the finite element method and programming skills in scripting languages like Python or Matlab;
  • Proficiency in English, both spoken and written (TOEFL > 90 or IELTS > 6.5 score).

We offer a full-time 4-year PhD position with a qualifier in the first year, excellent mentorship in a stimulating research environment, and a personal development program within the Twente Graduate School. The position includes a gross monthly salary of € 2.770 in the first year, increasing each year up to € 3.539 in the fourth year, as well as excellent benefits, a training program, and access to laboratory and support facilities.
