The bachelor programme Graphic Design of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) is currently looking for a Study Coach (0.2 FTE)

**What will you do?**:
Studying at KABK is an intense journey of artistic and personal discovery. Students don't just develop their creative skills - they explore who they are as makers and individuals. In this process they often encounter both practical and personal challenges.

Working within the Graphic Design department, you'll understand the specific demands of its curriculum, allowing you to guide students effectively. You'll conduct both individual and group sessions, supporting students while maintaining strong connections with teachers and staff. Your role goes beyond traditional academic support - you'll help students tap into their authentic selves while preparing them for the realities of their chosen field. There is a possibility for this position to become a larger appointment in the future, expanding study coaching for other departments.

As a study coach your role is to
- Be a crucial point of contact for students facing difficulties and create a trustworthy space where both successes and setbacks become stepping stones for growth;
- Support students in developing study skills, as well as mental-emotional, social and communication skills, empowering them to make the most of their studies;
- Examine together with the student what is needed to move forward in their study and provide them with the tools to do so. Guide students in their study trajectory academy-wide and within the department (especially labs/ISTs);
- Address motivation issues or potential study delays and provide support for mental-emotional issues such as stress and fear of failure when needed;
- Monitor and help students maintain an overview of their study progress and study career. Discuss study progress and EC points missing. Generally check that students have all study information and are fully ‘onboarded’;
- Advise, create and monitor adjusted study plans in cases of exceptional or healthrelated circumstances, in discussion with the head of the department and student counsellor;
- Address group dynamics within student classes, helping to foster cohesion, effective collaboration, and respect for different perspectives.

**Your profile**:
Educated with significant knowledge on coaching trajectories and/or through professional track record and expertise in the field of study career guidance;
- Experience in or affinity with the professional field of art and/or design;
- Experience in higher (arts) education;
- Knowledgeable and experienced in addressing mental health and addictions issues and respectful of procedures and communication in place to accommodate such issues;
- Empathetic yet professional in all strenuous personal situations that may arise during the study such as death of a relative, severe financial or emotional strain;
- Strong organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with an empathetic, respectful, and responsible approach;
- Ability to comfortably engage with diverse cultural and social backgrounds of an international student community including;
- Ability to coach students individually and in interactive group sessions;
- Skills to motivate and reflect on students' learning processes;
- Ability to work both independently and in close collaboration with educational departments and other study coaches;
- Awareness of personal limits and timely referral when necessary;
- Is self-reflective and open to discuss complicated work-related dilemmas with colleagues;
- Continuously strives for improvement of their own coaching competencies, pedagogical skills and self-knowledge through training and (peer-) supervision.

**About us**:
The Royal Academy of Art (KABK) forms together with the Royal Conservatoire (KC) the University of the Arts, The Hague. We offer HBO bachelor and master education, as well as preparatory courses. There is an intensive collaboration with Leiden University: students can take electives on both sides, there is a PhD program. The University of the Arts is located at two locations in the center of The Hague.

The full-time bachelor's programme in Graphic Design prepares students to be critical thinkers and versatile designers capable of developing exceptional visual communication concepts. Students are encouraged to express their goals by posing questions about the societal duties of a contemporary designer, confronting obstacles in the fast-expanding digital media world and seeking answers to contemporary concerns and dynamics. We have about 170 students and 43 tutors in our department.

**What we offer you**:
At first we offer a fixed-term contract for one-year, with the perspective a permanent appointment after two-year contracts. The position is classified as pay scale 10 under the Collective Agreement for Universities of Applied Sciences (CAO HBO).
