Student AI Engineers

to join us 

Project Description

SkillMix is developing an a
dvanced machine learning system to forecast short-term and medium-term energy prices.

This role focuses on
understanding the data and feature space:

analyzing how variables interact, capturing relevant market mechanisms in the data, and building diagnostics that help us understand
where the forecasting models perform well, or fail.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyse multivariate feature interactions influencing energy price forecasts.
  • Investigate energy market mechanisms such as supply-demand shocks, balancing markets, renewable output volatility, and cross border flows.
  • Build an interpretability framework using SHAP, LIME, integrated gradients, or other explainability models.
  • Run systematic experiments with different feature sets and baselines to measure the added value of new features.
  • Evaluate model performance under different market conditions (peak/off-peak, seasonal patterns, stress periods).
  • Document results, insights, and recommendations in a clear research report.
  • Present findings to SkillMix and the client.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of machine learning methods for forecasting (tree-based models, deep learning, hybrid architectures).
  • Knowledge of time series modelling (lags, rolling features, seasonality, autocorrelation structures).
  • Student in the Netherlands, Belgium or able to commute to Rotterdam.
  • Pursuing or completed a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Econometrics, or a related field).
  • Proven Python skills (we expect previous project experience).
  • Experience with data preprocessing, feature engineering, and time-series handling.
  • Ability to write clear research reports, and technical documentation.

Plus Points

  • Strong data preprocessing skills for noisy, high-frequency, or incomplete datasets.
  • Familiarity with energy markets (spot pricing, balancing markets, day-ahead vs inter-day).
  • Knowledge of Belgium imbalance market mechanisms.
  • Foundation in reinforcement learning theory (e.g., Markov decision processes, Bellman equations, value functions).
  • Interest in battery optimisation or energy trading applications.
