Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatician to join our team supporting Hendrix Genetics breeding programs worldwide. The candidate will join our Central R&D team within the Research and Technology Center (RTC) and will report directly to our office in the Netherlands. In this role, you will apply existing and novel methods to analyse DNA sequencing data to identify genetic causal variations and gene-edit sites. You will effectively translate academic tools into practical, implementable solutions that drive innovation in our breeding programs. With strong interpersonal skills, you collaborate with colleagues at the Hendrix Genetics RTC, Hendrix Genetics Business Units, and with our academic partners. You are also confident representing our company at client meetings and scientific conferences.

The position requires a strong background in bioinformatics with an emphasis on DNA sequence analysis and knowledge of Molecular Biology. The successful candidate is expected to run existing bioinformatics analytical workflows, derive biological insights from complex datasets, and translate these results into reports that can be shared with stakeholders. Advanced understanding of Molecular Biology concepts, distributed computing systems, and the Python programming language are advantages for prospective candidates. The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively and work closely with geneticists, senior management, and customers. The role involves regular international travel, typically ranging from a few days to attend academic events or scientific conferences.

What are your main tasks and responsibilities?

• Maintain detailed notes and organize datasets
• Implement and modify workflows to analyze gene edits in livestock and aquatic species.
• Execute computational workflows to identify causal genetic variation that may impact the phenotypes of Hendrix species
• Generate experimental designs and novel assays to detect off-target gene-edits and other genetic contamination
• Assist in the generation of Pangenome assemblies and assess the quality of genomics resources using existing and novel statistical tools
• Actively maintain and expand expertise in molecular genetics, genomics and statistics
• Representation of Hendrix Genetics at international conferences and events

Do you have the following requirements?

• Analytical and conceptual thinking
• Creative and innovative with the ability to independently design and execute projects
• Strong communication and capability to work within interdisciplinary teams
• Good networking abilities within industry, research and universities.
• A PhD in bioinformatics or computational genomics is preferable, or similar with experience in commercial breeding programs.
• Proficiency in Python and/or R
• Prior experience working on high performance computing clusters (HPC) or Azure virtual environments is desired but not essential
• Fluency in English is essential
