Staff Web Software Engineer

We are looking for a Staff Web Software Engineer to join our BUX team based in Amsterdam.

As a Staff Web Software Engineer, you will define and lead the vision for BUX's new web platform. 

You will be responsible for building out the foundational user journeys, from onboarding and exploration to portfolio insights and core savings and investing interactions. You will translate the strengths of BUX's mobile experience into a cohesive web offering while also defining web-native opportunities that improve reach, accessibility, and conversion. 

In this role, you'll go beyond writing excellent code; you'll shape our technical direction, elevate our engineering practices, and mentor engineers across the organisation, to help the company expand the product offering to a new platform (web).

As a Staff Web Software Engineer, you will lead technical topics. This could mean:

• Take project requirements, design solutions, and document them in RFCs (Request for Comments)

• Follow, learn, apply, and advocate for modern software development practices across the team and organisation

• Analyse technical challenges (e.g., scalability), raise awareness of technical debt, and proactively address system issues before they impact users

• Help grow the technical skills of less experienced colleagues and collaborate across teams on planning and execution of broader impact projects

• Discuss technical solutions with Product Owners, support colleagues with complex problems, and diagnose and resolve live user issues or monitoring alerts in a thought-out, planned, and organised manner

• Excellent command of Git and collaborative workflows (e.g., GitFlow)

• Excellent knowledge of web (SPA) concepts and the standard tooling around it

• Excellent command of JavaScript, TypeScript and the React JS / Vue JS framework ecosystems

• Experience setting up a project from scratch, by setting the correct architecture, Authentication and API contracts in place

• Solid knowledge of web performance best-practices: code splitting, lazy loading, SSR/edge rendering decisions, bundle analysis

• Solid knowledge of security best practices: XSS prevention, secure cookie/session handling, CSRF mitigation, content security policy, client-side encryption patterns when required. Must understand OWASP top risks for web apps

• You take initiative and push hard to turn ideas into real results

• A keen eye for detail while always keeping the big picture in mind

• Ability to own, be responsible and accountable for the success of the web project, where own direct code contribution is combined with mentoring of less experienced colleagues

• An Agile mindset and working knowledge of the Scrum framework

Nice to have

• Experience working with real-time data: websockets/streams, reconnection strategies, backpressure handling

• Experience with deploying a web application in a scalable way (containerization, CDN, etc.)

• Demonstrable experience with setting a design system and the ability to transfer those designs via mockups in UI with a fast iteration time

• You regularly use GenAI tools, stay up to date with new ones, and encourage the team to use them to speed up delivery and improve how everyone works
  

• You will start a green field project, and have the opportunity to set it up with the latest modern tools and practices

• You will have space to share your ideas, and be encouraged to always express your voice  

• You will be one of the most skilled technical people in the room, the leading engineer for the web platform, with the authority to make the decisions

• You will be challenged to work with real-time data and develop APIs that can provide a smooth user experience through high-quality, high-performance code  

• You will have the freedom to evaluate new tools that can be used to increase productivity, code readability, and maintainability

• Lastly, the business domain is interesting. You will learn how the financial system works on the inside
