 We are seeking an experienced Automation Lead to lead the automation department at a leading pharmaceutical manufacturing facility. This role is responsible for defining, implementing, and overseeing automation strategies, systems, and deliverables across the site. The successful candidate will bring strong leadership skills, deep expertise across automation platforms, and proven experience leading automation in pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.

This is a high-impact leadership role that will work cross-functionally with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Validation, and external vendors/contractors to ensure compliant, cost-effective, and timely delivery of automation solutions that support site operations and continuous improvement.

Job Responsibilities
  • Lead the automation function, ensuring site systems operate reliably, compliantly, and efficiently.
  • Develop and implement the automation strategy, standards, and roadmap in alignment with global engineering/automation policies.
  • Manage multiple automation platforms, including PCS7, PLC, SCADA, MES, BMS/EMS, Data Historians, and IT/OT integration.
  • Oversee automation lifecycle management, including system upgrades, patches, obsolescence planning, and cybersecurity compliance.
  • Provide technical leadership for automation in capital and expansion projects, from concept through commissioning, qualification, and handover.
  • Coordinate with EPCM contractors, OEMs, and system integrators to deliver automation systems that meet technical, operational, and regulatory requirements.
  • Act as automation system owner, ensuring GMP, GAMP 5, FDA, EMA, and data integrity compliance.
  • Drive digitalization initiatives and ensure secure, validated automation systems in line with global digital strategies.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of automation engineers and technicians, ensuring effective knowledge transfer and performance.
  • Partner with validation, quality, and operations to ensure smooth tech transfer, inspection readiness, and reliable ongoing operations.
  • Report regularly to leadership on automation performance, risks, and improvement initiatives.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Automation, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 10+ years' experience in automation within the pharmaceutical, biotech, or regulated manufacturing industry, including leadership roles.
  • Proven track record managing automation systems and projects (PCS7, PLC, SCADA, MES, data historians, BMS/EMS).
  • Strong background in GMP, GAMP 5, FDA/EMA regulations, and validation (DQ, OQ, PQ).
  • Experience with IT/OT integration, industrial networks, and cybersecurity for automation systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage teams, contractors, and external vendors.
  • Strong project management skills, with experience delivering automation elements on-time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, fluent in German; other European languages a plus.
  • Willingness to maintain strong on-site presence.
