Job description

We are looking for an assistant professor in Global Geodetic Observing Systems, with a focus on Positioning, Navigation and Timing, reference frames as well as geodetic observing data science. Further, the successful candidate is given the opportunity to develop their own research line, complementing ongoing research at Delft University of Technology.

The key job responsibilities of a successful candidate include:

Research:
Delivering high quality, internationally leading research related to Global Geodetic Observing Systems. (Co-)supervising PhD and MSc students aimed at successful completion of their theses. Effectively disseminating research outcomes via internationally leading journals and conferences is an intrinsic part of the job.

The successful candidate will:

  • Establish an own research field in Positioning, Navigation and Timing, related to their expertise
  • Develop Observing System Data Science (Delft observation theory, artificial intelligence, machine learning, distributed computing)
  • Be an expert and advisor on reference systems for a wide range of geodetic and Earth observation applications
  • Establish a Geodetic Observatory, including co-development and dissemination of data products and software tools

Education:
Contributing to the organization and teaching of relevant courses in the BSc and MSc programs of Applied Earth Sciences and Civil Engineering. This includes the opportunity to introduce new content and teaching methods matching the candidate’s expertise and interests in the renewed MSc programs. Preparing, supervising and assessing BSc and MSc student projects.

Valorization:
Initiating projects and obtaining funding for new research and/or education projects. We encourage proactive engagement with both private and government sectors, i.e. industry, business and community partners for societal impact. The successful candidate is expected to take an active role in national and international committees and working groups related to geodesy and satellite navigation.

Organization:
Contributing to organizational / administrative activities and committees within the Department of Geoscience and Remote Sensing and the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences.

Requirements

The successful candidate:

  • Holds a doctorate degree (PhD) in engineering or science in a relevant field, Geodesy, Geomatics, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and has expertise in the field of Satellite Navigation.
  • Has a track record that demonstrates their ability to independently perform and publish high quality research.
  • Demonstrates a strong outline for setting up their own research area and building their own research group, while at the same time establishing strong collaborations with colleagues within the department, faculty and university.
  • Has an affinity with and vision on teaching, preferably with teaching experience.
  • Possesses a good understanding of the higher education and academic environment, including diversity and inclusion values.
  • Has the capacity to communicate and cooperate effectively with peers, students and stakeholders.

Conditions of employment

This position is offered as an Academic Career Track position (0.8 – 1.0 FTE). During the Academic Career Track, we expect you to grow towards an Associate Professor position within a maximum of eight years, for which a position will be available. With other Academic Career Track colleagues, you will participate in the Academic Career Track Development programme, where you are offered ample opportunities to develop yourself in the areas of Education, Research, Societal Impact & Innovation, and Leadership & Organisation. You will regularly discuss your development and results with senior staff based on a personalized development plan and performance criteria agreed upon at the start of your Academic Career Track. You will start with a temporary contract that will be converted to a permanent contract no later than 12 -18 months after a positive evaluation, based on continuous confidence in your development potential and fit in the organisation.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
