War Child is an independent and impartial international non-governmental organization, with offices in nineteen countries, investing in a peaceful future for children and young people affected by armed conflict. In the War Child strategy 2016 – 2025, War Child's Research and Development (R&D) department is responsible for the rigorous development and evaluation of a holistic, multi-level and interconnected care system with interventions focused on child protection, education and psychosocial support and supportive approaches enabling accessibility and quality.
Can’t Wait to Learn (CWTL) is a curriculum-aligned, adaptive learning programme delivered on a tablet, designed to address some of the many challenges of access to quality education in conflict-affected settings, and employs a serious gaming approach and non-specialist facilitators. CWTL was first developed in Sudan for children living in areas where formal education infrastructure was unavailable. To date, multiple mixed-methods research studies on CWTL have been conducted and show promising results, including significant increases in mathematics and literacy competency as well as improvement to multiple dimensions of psychosocial wellbeing.
Your Challenge
The research coordinator forms the backbone of the research team, responsible for training and management of the data collectors, adaptation of research tools, and coordination of data collection.
The position sits in the CWTL research team, within Global R&D. The role is based in Ukraine. It will entail extensive collaboration with the CWTL Global and Ukraine teams. The Research Coordinator will report to the lead researcher and will coordinate closely with research staff in Ukraine.
Your Responsibilities
Contribute to development and contextualisation of research documents and data collection tools. Coordinate submission of protocol to research ethics committee Coordinate and communicate with in-country partners. Manage recruitment, selection & hiring of research assistants. Lead/co-lead research assistant training. Coordinate and supervise all data collection (quantitative and qualitative) and research activities. Comply with data management and protection regulations and adverse events reporting. Support translation and quality assurance of research documents and data. Coordinate closely with national programme team and international research team. Contribute to data cleaning, analysis and research publications.
Your Profile
Essential:
- At least Masters level degree in relevant field (e.g. Education, Social sciences, Health) or 3 years’ of directly relevant experience
- At least 2 years’ experience in coordinating field-based research with human subjects in a relevant field (i.e. psychosocial support, education, and/or child protection).
- Extensive professional background in Ukraine, along with a deep understanding of the humanitarian context and operational dynamics of NGOs within the region.
- Proven track record in implementing research activities and data management for research projects with human subjects.
- Experience in training and supervision of research assistants.
- Excellent English (oral and written) and Ukrainian (oral and written).
- Strong (research) communication skills
- Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative.
- Ability to work remotely with international colleagues based in different countries.
- Full-time availability and commitment for the duration of the research period, approximately 1 to 2 years.
- Involvement in the conduct of a quasi-experimental evaluation, cluster randomized controlled trial, or similar.
- Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tactic and diplomacy.
Desirable:
- Experience in (basic) analyses of quantitative and qualitative datasets, utilizing software such as STATA, R, NVivo, or similar packages.
- Previous experience as a research coordinator within a field-based project setting.
- Collaboration experience with governmental bodies and international organisations.
- Familiarity and hands-on experience with community-based research methodologies.
- Technical competency and prior experience implementing various programme evaluation methodologies and approaches.
- Demonstrated skills in overseeing research, assessments, and evaluations effectively.
- Adaptability and flexibility, showcasing the ability to adapt, be flexible, and accommodative within challenging and insecure operating environments.
Important Note: This position is to be based in Ukraine. The initial contract will be in the form of a consultancy agreement until we finalize our country registration in Ukraine or find and alternative way to hire. War Child remains the right to change the contract type.
Our offer
Local contract with salary and secondary labour conditions based on the in-country salary scale, local T&C's will apply. Initially the contract will be via a consultancy agreement.
