Job description

Come join our team as an enthusiastic research fellow to engage in multi-disciplinary research on cutting-edge rail-based freight mobility systems. A Post-doc position and a Junior research position are open at the freight and logistics lab to explore innovative and revolutionary mobility concepts, involving market-ready digital solutions and automation. We explore different related areas including designing and modelling the system for rail, road, and logistics, embedding the system in a cyber-physical framework. Candidates with related backgrounds are welcome to apply. We specifically encourage applicants with expertise in operations research with familiarity with railway scheduling, vehicle routing, and on-demand modelling of systems and knowledge of a) distributed optimization and control and b) software architecture design and digital twins. The project is embedded in the PoDs4Rail (Homepage 01 - Pods4Rail) European project which explores innovative concepts related to application of automated modular vehicles in multi-modal transport. Ideal candidates are expected to possess a strong sense of self-motivation, a clear career objective with the ambition to engage in group leadership and project management, and strong academic records. Due to the highly interdisciplinary nature of the research, the candidate should possess and welcome interfacing with related fields and communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the research group as well as industry partners. The duration of the positions is at least 18 months with the potential to be extended.

For post-doctoral positions, you have

  • a PhD degree in Computer science, Operations research, Transportation Engineering or a related field (with a strong background in optimization and mathematical modelling) and/or
  • a strong background in distributed control, and multi-agent learning,
  • You have experience with standard problems such as VRP, railway scheduling, fleet management, and similar.
  • You are familiar with the areas of multimodal freight transport, railway operations, planning and related fields.
  • You have strong programming skills.

For researchers, you

  • are familiar with creation of modular software architectures
  • have strong software development skills in relevant programming languages such as Python
  • have knowledge in data management and software integration methods
  • are familiar with, keen on deepening your knowledge in digital twins.

Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences

The Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology, and delta technology. Our research feeds into our educational programmes and covers societal challenges such as climate change, energy transition, resource availability, urbanisation and clean water.
