Graduate Student: Adjusting pattern-based shifts to volatile demand forecasts

Job description

ORTEC Workforce for Warehousing (OWW) is a cloud native employee rostering solution catered specifically to the scheduling of shifts and tasks to employees working in warehouses. OWW creates schedules for employees such that hard constraints (e.g., labor rules) are not violated and soft constraints (e.g., preferences of employees and planners) are respected as much as possible.

Scheduling in this industry usually starts with a fixed pattern for each employee. However, it might be optimal to deviate from the pattern based on volatile demand forecasts. We would like to:

I. Create a model that reschedules and adjusts shifts compared to the pattern to find a better fit for the fluctuations in the demand.

II. Incorporate this model into a rostering algorithm.

III. Assess the effect of the algorithm based on predefined KPI’s and compare the effect to the current scheduling methods used.

Who you are

You are in your last year of your Master’s in the field of operations research, applied mathematics, computer science, or other similar areas. You are familiar with the concept of heuristics. You are proficient in at least one object-oriented programming language, e.g., C#, Java. You can communicate fluently in English or Dutch, verbally and in writing. You live in the Netherlands and study at a Dutch University. You are able to travel to the Zoetermeer office of ORTEC for a few days a week. Hybrid working is possible. You are available for a minimum of six months, for 32-40 hours a week.
