Our Digital Engineering division delivers and integrates digital solutions to enable renewable energy production and reliable operations. As such digital engineering is the supplier of digital solutions within the Business Unit Offshore Wind and is responsible for supporting the whole value chain (from winning bids to building assets and operating assets) with a focus on Operational Technology (OT) and IT. We realise synergies in control and analytical modelling, and we enable the optimisation of engineering design by capturing and integrating all relevant data (end-to-end).

Your Role as Principal Engineer

As Principal Engineer, you will support the Head of Digital Engineering to oversee and coordinate the technical development. You will be in charge of maintaining and defining the technical framework for development. Furthermore, ensure that the engineering activities are aligned with the business strategy, Engineering backbone, Portfolio Perspectives and the line organisation. In this role you will support the full lifecycle perspective and portfolio of our windfarms, this includes, but will not be limited to;

• Competence development

• Product development

• Project execution

• O&M

• EOL and decommissioning

The principal engineer has the highest level of technical authority within a defined technical area and covers the cross alignment between the principal engineers of all technical areas to ensure that interfaces are clearly defined to support the business with the strategy execution.

The role of Principal Engineer will proactively engage in highly complex assignments of the business, in product development, project delivery or operations. Decomposes techno-economic challenges in the organisation into executable solutions, provides quality assurance. You will participate in regular technical reviews of ongoing asset projects, PRRs, product projects within roadmaps and as a part of product steering committee to ensure strategy implementation.

Further tasks associated with the role of Principal Engineer:

• Overarching Technical Authority (TA) for Digital Engineering

• Defining the Technical Framework within Digital Engineering â

• Delegates TA to TA2 for the different Technical Areasâ

• Ensures alignment across Project Delivery & Engineering Functionâ

• Participate in the architecture board and collaborate closely with Vattenfall IT and BA Wind Digitalisation around sustainable solutions for the greater good.

• Communicate technology strategy for current products, enabling technologies for new business opportunities and for long-term vision in the technical area.

• Within digital product, formulate together with the product managers the idea/concepts for product development.

• As the highest technical authority in the Engineering discipline, reviews and approves key technology documents to ensure consistency, quality, stakeholder alignment and compliance assurance.

• Actively participates in the technical Coordination Forum, ensures transparency on JIP and R&D work within the specific engineering discipline. Participate in IPR reviews and supports patent applications.

• Instils an innovative and entrepreneurial environment while balancing the associated risks and maintaining the overview of the whole technical area.

• Supports system integration, interfaces and alignment of the developments in the competence area to ensure functionality and efficiency. Act as interface between the various competence areas within Engineering.

• Oversees the process & tools maturation and application in technical field.

• Collects and disseminate learnings from internal and external projects, e.g  by initiating and hosting regular knowledge exchange forum and by steering future technical improvements.

Location:

We are looking for a principal engineer to join our office in Hamburg, Kolding or Amsterdam.

To be up and running quickly and feel comfortable in your role we think it requires the following qualifications:

• University degree (M.Sc. or PhD) within the engineering field, with a minimum of 7-10 years relevant work experience within the Principal Topic including experience as a manager or chief engineer.

• Experienced in project assignments throughout their lifetime as well as a detailed understanding of technology and its potential optimisation. 

• Fluent in English, both verbal and written form.

• Strong leadership skills and the ability to create and maintain a motivating environment in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment, driving progress and solutions towards the target

• Strong positive mindset, living our values with Safety, Open, Active and Positive.

• Strong communicator with strong interpersonal and network-building skills to manage stakeholders

• The principal engineer shall be skilled in dealing with strategic, highly complex issues, problems and challenges and can transfer technical challenges into economic impact and solution-oriented for the benefit of the overall Vattenfall goals.

It is important that as an indirect leader in the technical area, the Principal Engineer shall possess strong coaching skills and the ability to lead and guide the technical engineering disciplines with a strong delivery mindset, solution-oriented and solid technical foundation for decision-making. The Innovative mindset and ability to see, and spot new trends within the technical area.
