About the role:


At Mews we're evolving our risk processes, including creating an Anti-Money Laundering team with a Transaction Monitoring and Fraud team within it.

To help us do this, we're looking for an experienced Transaction Monitoring and Fraud Operations Manager who can
design and implement a transaction monitoring and fraud risk management program to support the delivery of Mews's 2024/25 company strategy.

This will include setting up some teams and processes from scratch and delivering on-the-job training on best practices, new ways of working, and new processes to the team.


Your mission, should you choose to accept it:

Process development and daily operations:

- be responsible for establishing and managing establishing transaction monitoring and fraud workstreams within the Anti-Money Laundering team with a combination of 3rd party tools (longer term) and exploring the potential of internal data sets in the shorter term. Your prior experience in designing, monitoring, and tuning rule based alerts is essential alongside knowledge of risk based escalation flows, and timeliness of alert disposition
- you will
actively engage in daily operational processes when you first join to understand the scope of current transaction risk operations
and, on an ongoing basis, to demonstrate how to operationalize the new transaction monitoring and fraud processes that you will be designing
- be responsible for the fraud and transaction monitoring workstreams, using data and other qualitative insights to direct you towards process improvement to make their work can be made easier. This will include establishing metrics from scratch; so ideally you'll know which data points to measure and common tools and methodologies for extracting these data points

Training and leadership.
- provide hands-on support, using it as an opportunity to lead by example, aligning with policy and best practice be a mentor to the team. The team will look to you to enable their development opportunities and you recognize the significance of day to day informal training alongside formal development and external training opportunities
- be the bridge between the 2024/25 strategy and daily operations, identifying the operational steps needed to deliver strategy and setting the team's focus and priorities accordingly
- be a spokesperson for the team; escalating issues when something isn't going as it should and representing the team's where there are conflicting viewpoints or priorities

Policy and governance

  • Use internal data insights and external factors to form views on risk trending, identify strategic opportunities (or gaps) and present these analyses in a structured way to leadership
  • Contribute to creation of governance frameworks, including writing policy and procedure documents, the latter with the support of the process experts in your team; your prior experience doing the same in other organisations ensures this can be done in a consultative but efficient way

You'll be a great fit if you bring a few of the below with you

  • A bachelors degree, preferably in criminology, financial crime, law, information technology, or another related field
  • Prior experience working in transaction risk in a
    (fin)tech start up or scale up:

  • At least 8 years experience in transactional risk management, including prior experience as an operations lead (whether in transaction risk or elsewhere within anti-money laundering risk management)
  • Demonstrated experience implementing new processes from scratch
  • Strong policy and procedure drafting skills, second line of defence experience is desirable
  • Prior experience in developing training materials, delivering (informal) seminars or training sessions
  • Have prior experience working in
    an environment of change and to some extent being the changemaker
