Chemical Engineering Internship: Debonding of glue connections

Background Information

The group Sensors Mechanics is part of the cluster Mechanical Development and is responsible for the design of optical sensor systems, like wafer height measurement systems and image sensors and to harvest the expensive individual parts for reuse or repair, to reduce waste and increase sustainability.
Part of the development portfolio of this group are the so-called image sensors – different types - which are located on the wafer stage and are used to measure e.g. the position of the focal plane of the projection lens, the light energy, optical aberrations and the position of the stage with respect to a reference. These different sensor systems have in common that they contain a light detecting device including necessary supporting electronics and that the main individual parts are glued together into a sensor assembly. For economic and sustainability reasons, it makes sense to disassemble these sensor system once they are sent back to ASML because of an operational defect at the customer or obsolescence and to harvest the individual expensive parts for reuse or repair.

Your Assignment

In order to harvest the individual parts of the sensor systems, the epoxy glue connections need to be debonded and the glue remnants on the parts must be completely removed. Since the sensors are used in an extremely clean and (depending on the sensor type) in an vacuum environment, this requires a dedicated debonding process. In order to make steps in the ambition to harvest and reuse sensor parts, ASML collaborates with an industrial partner.

This assigment should focus on the following steps and deliverables:
- literature study on available debonding processes for specific epoxy adhesives
- investigate the available experimental knowledge already collected and tested by the industrial partner and the "glue competence group" of ASML
- determine the specifications for the debonding process taking particle defectivity and outgassing into account
- determine in close collaboration with ASML glue competence group suitable debonding processes and conduct experiments, eventually improve the most suitable debonding process
- verify the results of the debonding experiments and check these against the defined specifications
- report out on the results with conclusions and recommendations

Your Profile

To be considered for this role, you:

Are a Master's student with a background in chemistry, materials science or equivalent expertise Have an interest in making a next step in reuse and sustainability Are self-propelling, solution oriented, communicative student with a pro-active approach with a hands-on mentality to conduct glue experiments including analyses.

This is a graduation/apprentice internship for 5 days a week with a duration of 5-9 months, starting in September.

Please note that we can only consider students who are enrolled at a school for the entire duration of the internship.
