Mechanical Engineering Internship: Model curing induced deformation in glue

3 maanden geleden

Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant, Nederland ASML Voltijd

Background Information

The group Sensors Mechanics is part of the cluster Mechanical Development and is responsible for the design of optical sensor systems, like wafer height measurement systems and image sensors.
Part of the development portfolio of this group are the so-called image sensors – different types - which are located on top of the wafer stage and are used to measure e.g. the position of the focal plane of the projection lens, the light energy, optical aberrations and the position of the stage with respect to a reference. These sensors have in common that they use a camera or sensor covered with a glass plate with optical markers. The glass plate with markers is glued with a 2-component epoxy in the sensor housing. The inevitable deformations that occur by curing the glue at high temperature are a threat to the strict flatness requirements on the glass plate. You are challenged to model this effect and how it relates to parameters we can control to finally optimize the flatness after glueing.

Your Assignment

The assignment is to model curing-induced deformation and how it depends on the curing scheme. For that it will be needed to dive into the physics of the phenomenon and the available literature how to translate glue behavior to a mechanical model of the glued sample/product. Results derived from previous studies conducted within ASML will be input to the model. It'll likely be necessary to think of improved experiments to verify certain specifics of your model. A measurement set-up is available at ASML which can be used for your experiments. During your assignment you will be in touch with mechanical and physics sensor architects and the glue competence of ASML.

Assignment:
- get familiar with results from previous studies conducted by ASML and dive into the relevant literature;
- set-up a model to predict the cure-induced-deformation. Improve the existing model.
- validate the derived model by experiments;
- ideally, your end result is an optimized curing scheme for minimal curing-induced deformation.

Your Profile

To be considered for this role, you:

Are a Master's student in Mechanical Engineering or Physics or equivalent Have skills to create physical models Have an interest in the physical and chemical background (a plus) Are self-propelling, solution oriented, communicative with a pro-active approach with a hands-on mentality to conduct glue experiments including analyses.

This is a graduation/apprentice internship for 5 days a week with a duration of 5-9 months, starting in September.

Please note that we can only consider students who are enrolled at a school for the entire duration of the internship.

Change the world – one nanometer at a time.

Become an intern at a Dutch company that's a global industry leader. You'll gain valuable experience in a highly innovative environment – one that sparks your imagination and creativity. In addition to a monthly internship allowance of maximum €600 (plus possible housing allowance and free public transport), you'll get practical guidance from experts in the field and the chance to work in and experience a dynamic team environment.

ASML: be part of progress.

ASML is a high-tech company headquartered in the Netherlands. We manufacture the complex lithography machines that chipmakers use to produce integrated circuits, or computer chips. What we do is at the heart of all the electronic devices that keep us informed, entertained, and connected. Every day, you use electronics that simply wouldn't exist without our machines.

Behind ASML's innovations are engineers who think ahead. The people who work at our company include some of the most creative minds in physics, electrical engineering, mathematics, chemistry, mechatronics, optics, mechanical engineering, computer science and fields which are not technically oriented. We believe we can always do better. We believe the winning idea can come from anyone. We love what we do – not because it's easy, but because it's hard.

Students: getting ready for real-world R&D

We're a global team of about 42,000 people of 140 different nationalities and counting. Headquartered in Europe's top tech hub, the Brainport Eindhoven region in the Netherlands, our operations are spread across Europe, Asia, and the US. In such an environment, your colleagues may be sitting next door, or they could be thousands of kilometers away in a different country – or even working for a different company.
