Mechanical Engineering Internship: Metrology of Subnanometer Adhesion

The Sensors Mechanics group, part of the Mechanical Development cluster, focuses on designing optical sensor systems, including wafer height measurement systems and image sensors. These sensors, located on top of the wafer stage, measure parameters such as the position of the focal plane, light energy, optical aberrations, and stage position relative to a reference. A common feature among these sensors is the use of a camera or sensor covered with a glass plate featuring optical markers. The glass plate is glued to the sensor housing using a 2-component epoxy. The stability of this glue connection is crucial, as any deviation can compromise the quality of the integrated circuit produced by our customer. However, the glue connection is prone to outgassing when exposed to the vacuum inside our scanners, which can further reduce stability. Given the limited in-scanner test time, an offline platform is necessary to test potential improvements.
Your AssignmentYour task is to set up and conduct experiments to investigate and improve the drift inherent to some performance-critical glue connections. Available set-ups at ASML and elsewhere will need to be evaluated for suitability and optimized for use. You will need to determine the accuracy of the instrument, select suitable samples, and design a stable support system. Additionally, you will be responsible for processing the results and presenting them in a meaningful way. Any ideas for improving the stability of the glue connection that arise during this process are welcome. If time allows, you may have the opportunity to transform these ideas into prototypes to demonstrate feasibility and performance on your set-up.
Your Profile- You are a Master's student with a background in mechanical engineering, physics, or equivalent expertise.
- You possess a self-propelling, solution-oriented, and communicative approach with a hands-on mentality, enabling you to conduct glue experiments and analyses.
