Mechanical Engineering Internship: Micro-slip Analysis

Background Information
The Sensors Mechanics group, part of the Mechanical Development cluster, focuses on the design and implementation of optical sensor systems. These systems include wafer height measurement devices, broadband light sources, and precision projection systems. A significant aspect of our work involves developing various types of image sensors that operate on the wafer stage, measuring critical parameters such as the focal plane position, light energy, optical aberrations, and stage positioning relative to a reference point. Achieving stability at sub-nanometer levels is essential, especially given the high accelerations these sensors experience, which are expected to increase in the future. Such accelerations can exert substantial forces on the mechanical connections between the sensors and the wafer stage, potentially leading to micro-slip issues.
Your Assignment
Measuring the micro-slip phenomenon in our systems presents challenges due to the multitude of potential error sources. Therefore, we seek your expertise in defining a test setup that simulates micro-slip by applying fluctuating forces on a sensor-wafer stage connection while simultaneously measuring displacement with a device capable of sub-nanometer accuracy. Collaboration with the VSL National Metrology Institute in Delft will provide access to a precise measurement setup that operates under vacuum conditions, ensuring the test setup effectively triggers the micro-slip phenomenon.
Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Familiarizing yourself with the picometer measurement setup at VSL;
- Determining the spatial requirements for the test setup to apply forces on a mock sensor-wafer stage connection;
- Designing a conceptual framework for the test setup, collaborating with the ASML team for feedback, and finalizing the design with detailed drawings;
- Constructing a prototype of the test setup and validating its functionality within the VSL measurement environment;
- Conducting initial measurements to demonstrate the setup's capabilities;
- Documenting your activities and findings comprehensively.
Your Profile
The ideal candidate for this internship:
- Is currently enrolled in a master's program in Mechanical Engineering, preferably with a focus on precision engineering or mechatronics;
- Is willing to travel for collaborative efforts;
- Possesses a solution-oriented mindset and a hands-on approach;
- Has strong communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
This internship is designed for 5 days a week, with a minimum duration of 5 months. Candidates must be enrolled in their academic program for the entire internship period.
